In my opinion banking on the progression of younger players doesn't really constitute the team doing anything to get better. If Colt doesn't show the improvement that a lot of people are expecting/hoping for this is going to be a 4-5 win team again, which would mean the #29 ranking is pretty accurate.
I know they have "a plan", but they basically stood pat in the off-season so I completely understand where the reasoning that they didn't do anything to get better would come from.
You're right, but the system works for
these players to execute. Do you think that Robiskie and Massaquoi would be starters on any other team in the NFL? Probably not. But they're both really young, and better suited for the WCO, thus the reason the FO didn't go after any WRs this offseason.
The Browns are doing, essentially, the same thing the Green Bay Packers did in the years building up to their Super Bowl win. They're following their plan, which I know doesn't mean much to you apparently, but part of that plan was getting rid of an incompetent coach in Eric Mangini, and bringing in Pat Shurmur - that right there
instantly makes them a better team.
I understand that Shurmur has never been a head coach, but the vibe around the Browns locker room is that the players would play for Shurmur every single day of the week and twice on Sunday. The players, from everything I read, built up a resenment towards Mangini last year.
Instead of taking the giant steps backwards that we're use to seeing this team take, they've moved forward. Do you honestly think, that Derek Anderson or Jake Delhomme or Brady Quinn, would've taken on a leadership role during the lockout the way that McCoy has?
The players on this team, have made the Browns better. Maybe they've yet to prove it, but there's more hope and reason to believe in this team than any of the Browns other teams since their return.
If the Browns are a 4-5 win team again this year, it's probably going to have more to do with the team being unable to overcome injuries as opposed to McCoy's improvement this year. You look at the Brown's schedule, and I honestly believe that they are better than 9 - maybe 10 - of the teams they face this year.
I'm not saying they'll win 9-10 games, I know that's not likely to happen. Injuries are going to play a huge part as well as depth. The product on the field is going to be better than in years past. Now, the back-ups are going to be leaned on a lot this year, and that's not going to play well in our favor. But they are
no worse than what we had on the field last year.
