This happened about 4 miles from my house. We were driving to lunch and happened to take the back way so we didn't go directly through it. As we got on the highway, we saw the CareFlight helicopter take off and assumed it was a car accident. It wasn't until we were at lunch and my BF received a call from his co-worker that we actually found out what had happened.

Deputy Hopper responded to a call at Enon Beach, which is a local trailer park/campground. I've heard conflicting reports on what the call was about, but it seems the neighbors called after their trailer was shot. She suffered a shotgun blast to the face when the suspect fired a round.

Some of the local stations/papers have some in-depth coverage, including the 2nd officer being shot, as they were able to get photographers/videographers there before the shoot-out started.

I go by there in the summer time when traveling to one of my golf locations. It's amazing that no cars on 70 eastbound/west bound were hit. I hope he suffered before he died. What a low life scumbag!!!

Pretty messed up. Said she had no chance. How did the guy who got shot in the arm turnout, he was critical last time I saw a report?

Be Nice, apparently they shut the highway down while this was all happening. We got on 70 just after they re-opened it (so we've figured based on the timeline) and were wondering why so many OSP cars were on there.

Gerb, the last report I heard was fair condition.

Yeah pretty crazy.. I live about 2 miles from there. Do a search on youtube for Enon Beach they have the gun fight on there. It's like 39 seconds or something, when it was first posted you could see Deputy Hopper laying in front of the trailor while the fight is going on. Someone told me she is blurred out now which is good. Can't believe there were reporters that close to get video.

voe, I live just down on Dayton Rd. towards Springfield. It's crazy to think it was that close.

When we saw the news crews, they were pretty far back. The video is fairly close, but I was assuming they had an awesome lens. The perimeter that I saw they had established didn't have the news crews nearly that close. I did see the first run of the video, and they had her blurred out. All the shots and footage I've seen so far have done that.

I just searched it because I hadn't seen it. The one I checked out didn't have her blurred out.

Very tragic. I see the shooter had a history of mental illness and shot at a police officer before. Expect more of this in the future as Ohio's mental health system has been cut to the bone already with more cuts to come.

I just learned that the shooter was involved in a similar incident -- no one was killed -- in Morgan County in 2001.

Unbelievable. I don't know why he was let go/slapped on the wrist the first time.

I just got a chance to see this on NBC4 tonight and they had the video of it up. The situation really could have ended up being worse though if you think about it. Some of the officers who were returning fire into the trailer were hiding behind what appeared to be a massive propane/gas tank. Not the best cover, but clearly you can't be expected to think 100% clear under those conditions. Horrible stuff.

Never heard of the guy but I remember hearing about this. Crazy crap.

This all started the 26 hour standoff in Morgan Co 10 years ago....
The pair had apparently become upset earlier in the week when other campers had taken firewood from the community pile. Jenkins said the couple fired shots near the other campers, which sparked a call to the sheriff's office.

When deputies approached the campsite Wednesday afternoon, the couple allegedly fired at the deputies, Jenkins said.
SMH.

Lol I'm not a liar, I don't hate cops, I just don't care for them. I believe the term is indifferent. Funny how you cant differentiate the two.

I see I struck another chord though, calling me names because of my opinion? You kids are funny.

Grow up :)

Yeah, because bringing in your personal distaste for a certain group of people in a thread that is about someone dying is very grown up..... Nice fail idiot.

If I had an opinion that made me look like a piece of garbage I'd keep it to myself.

Also, it was a female cop. You said "his" family. So of course you didn't read the article to see what happened. You just decided to drop in and show your true colors as a cop hating jerk.

On topic, it's a sad, sad story. Prayers go out to everyone touched by the tragedy.
