Kind of a lateral move IMO

Surprises me. I thought Edsell would stay with Uconn

Huh.

Leach has been the dominate name around campus.
I would rather have Leach, but Randy is a great coach and I would say its an upgrade. ACC> Big East. Plus, he has the DC market and recruiting area here. Also, Maryland finished 8-4 last year and has a stellar underclass.

Not official yet though.

Edsall has great recruiting ties down there... I really think that he's done all that he could possibly do at UConn, he led the transition to D1, won a Big East title, and went to a BCS game. What much more is there to do?

Nice.

Post reports Edsell visited campus today and will be hired officially tomorrow.
On Leach, sounds like Maryland got "cold feet", and wanted to go the conventional route.

I'm warming up the hire. Leach would have been better in my view, but Edsell still brings a hardnosed, tough, energetic approach to the Terps. The Fridge left a solid team that could compete for the ACC crown next year.

Good hire, seems like a nice guy and has done all he can do with a program based in New England (where recruiting is non-existent).

Maryland should be happy with the hire. Billick was a pipe dream. There is a reason why Leach has been passed over numerous times (and he has never even taken a team to a BCS bowl - can you say overrated?). He should do well.

Losers: The Big East. Your champion just lost its coach to a mid-level ACC program?

*Co-champions. and they Weren't that good. UConn can't consistently compete in the BE bc they can't recruit with Pitt, WVU, Louisville and lately UC. The BE was wayyyyy down this year. UConn is losing a lot of seniors and won't compete at all next year.

Stupid move bc Maryland is in a similar situation as UConn. They can't compete with the rest on the ACC on a regular basis.

Why can't they?
They have a solid recruiting area, some adequate facilities (need a new stadium), have a pretty good history, and is usually in the hunt for the ACC divisional title.

They've only won one ACC championship in the last 25 years. That was in 2001 before BC, VT, and Miami came on board. They have finished second twice in their division, but their best conference record has been 5-3 since they split into divisions. They don't consistently compete. Yes the recruiting is more fertile in Maryland than in Connecticut, but the competition is recruiting in Florida.

I disagree with Goosebumps here, Maryland is much better situation than UCONN for Edsell. At MD Edsell will have much a much more fertile recruiting territory. Let's face it, there is not a lot of football talent in places like Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire. I think UCONN football has hit its ceiling the past few years. In addition to all of this UCONN football is in the unique situation of getting less attention than both their men and women's basketball programs.

As for recruiting Florida in the ACC, it has to be done in the BE as well. USF is already there, WVU and Louisville recruits well there and odds are that UCF will be in the conference in a couple years as well.

I don't disagree that he hit the ceiling at UConn, I just don't think the ceiling is any higher at Maryland. I could be wrong. I definitely wish him luck, he's a good guy.

He seems like a good coach, will never be top dog at uconn (BB always first), and Maryland has been good at times. Personally from a Pitt point of view, I am glad to see him go because he outcoached Pitt more than one I think.

Maryland and WVU used to be an awesome rival. Wonder if that will start up again?

Yeah, I think that Maryland, with the right coach in place could compete year in and year out in the ACC. The Fridge started the rebuild and he did an alright job, but Edsell can make the Terps a regular contender in the ACC. He has the tools at Maryland. But, frankly, BB is still tops at Maryland too.

Also, next year yes the Terps will play WVU in College Park as well as a showdown with the Irish at Fedex Field. I plan to head to both games.

Seems like a solid coach. Pulled a dick move though by not telling UConn players. They found out when they got off the plane today through friends/family texting them.

I've read on a couple sites the Under Armor is putting a lot of $$ into MD athletics. Sort of like Nike with Oregon. I am guessing the Terps are giving Edsell a nice pay raise.

Yeah, The owner and founder of Under Armor is a former Terp walk on and based in Baltimore.

He should have been a man and told them face to face like he made the player leaving for the NFL do.

When Frank Beamer is the best coach in the conference, it is easily winnable. Edsell will do well at Maryland. Great hire.

The UnderArmor angle is intriguing as well.

Edsall's been trying to get out of there for years, figured he'd maybe get a better job than this. Whatever I guess *shrugs shoulders*

If Maryland is getting their own version of Phil Knight then this may be his best option.

It's not like he didn't have a chance to tell the players first. They deserve this, even though he is bailing on them.
