IMO, all these guys are doing is saying they'll return; they'll have this bowl game as their last "audition" for the NFL and they'll go pro. Maybe not all, but I think a few will. I also think Tressel knows this, but as OneBuckeye said, is covering his ass to justify why he is allowing them to play in the bowl game.
who cares if they end up leaving? OSU football will go on without them.If they do back out on their work it makes them look like shit and will certainly hurt their draft stock. Not many teams are going to take a chance on guys known with bad character...especially when none of them are projected 1st round anyway.

Did I say I care if they leave? I want them to leave. What I am saying is Tressel is just covering his ass with this BS move and committment crap. I agree that these guys aren't highly projected in the draft, but Clarett went in the 3rd round and other players with questionable characteristics have also been drafted before, this won't change how the NFL vies them. They'll go whereever they would have even if they didn't get in trouble.

Man, you guy act like these 5 kids solicited hookers, sold dope, and murdered infants.
Just STFU. What's done is done, and it was done 2 years ago. They were punished, the matter is closed.
Jim Tressel, being the great person he is, held them to their punishment. If they weren't coming back, they weren't getting the privilege of playing in the bowl game and instead, that would have been their punishment.

Also, I find it funny how you "fans" can support these same kids UNTIL they get into a bad situation, then you flee the scene and turn your back on them. Some GREAT (and I use that term lightly) fans you are.
Imagine if the team quit on the fans everytime a situation got tough?

Third and final post, but I keep seeing a lot of "Tressel is covering his ass" posts...
Exactly what is he covering his ass from? The NCAA ruled them ELIGIBLE to play in the bowl game. If Tressel allows them to play, there is NOTHING wrong with it. Stop trying to justify your hate on these 5 individuals in any way possible.

This also tells me that Tressel thinks or knows that the suspensions will get reduced.
That is exactly what I thought when I first heard of this. What players would commit to play next year to only play 7 games? They must know something we don't.

Personally, it won't bother me a bit if any of them do leave. If they change their mind, thats human. I will still root them on in the NFL if they get drafted.

SURE.....but they will be on the scout team. No sense giving them any reps until the week before they become eligible.

Hoops23 hit the nail on the head. With all of the behavior we see out of our athletes today, these guys are getting, or will get, what they deserve.....suspension from college football games or dealing with going back on their word publicly. At least in this given situation Coach Tressel is trying to be sure that these guys pay some kind of price for taking a crap on OSU tradition. I can't stand when players or coaches at the college level get hit with sanctions, bolt to the league or another school, and leave the school they were with to handle their time on probation while athletes and coaches who did nothing wrong foot the bill. It is comical that Tressel is getting taken to town by some of you for doing what I believe is holding some people personally accountable!
Also, I can't wait to see how many of you change your toon if some or all of these guys do indeed come back next season and lead OSU to a national championship appearance!

Why all the hate for Coach Tressel? He's doing what he feels is best for these kids, as well as the team...how'd you like that idiot from tsun to be our leader, or anyone else for that matter. Be careful, Buckeye Nation, we haven't had a coach like this in a long time, so we should appreciate what we have while we still have it.

It's Tressel's job to win football games. That's what he is paid for. He isn't trying to make the players come back so they can serve their punishment. He's doing it to make sure he has good football players coming back next year. If you think otherwise, you are naive.
My God, if this was Rodriguez, or any SEC coach, you guys would be ripping him a new asshole and making up everything in the book.

So what do YOU think should happen? Since you seem to bitch and moan over EVERYTHING OSU. Hell I wouldn't care if they all bounced for the league, but I don't have an issue with the current arrangement.

You seriously couldn't be more wrong. He could care less about any of them coming back. Pryor could have gone this year anyway, and the last 7 games he could play he would hardly be expected to make an impact...the others have backups that probably exceed their counterparts. Swing and a miss here Web.

That's your opinion. I don't agree. Tressel, from day 1, has shown morals just like this. And yeah, he's paid to win games. But this has nothing to do with wins and losses.WebFire;619368 wrote:It's Tressel's job to win football games. That's what he is paid for. I like the decision by JT. He was in a terrible spot because of these 5 players. You've got the media all over your ass. You have the Sugar Bowl execs pushing for these guys to play in the BCS. You have the NCAA siding with the BCS and leaving them eligible for the bowl game. You now have tons of uncertainty in regards to these players leaving early because of the suspensions, which can throw recruiting off. Not to mention you have Buckeye Nation, one of the most rabid fan bases in college football, split on what to do with these players in regards to their bowl status.
At least this way, he now knows what these players plan on doing in regards to staying/going pro. This ensures that the players have to serve the punishment. This satisfies both the BCS and NCAA. And this all gives the fan base some kind of certainty moving forward.
IMO, Tress made the most out of an almost impossible situation.

If they do that, then that's on them. JT is at least putting the ball back in these guys' court. Both a good coaching and PR move IMO.

In my opinion there are 2 types of coaches: those who coach to win at all costs vs. those who coach to win while instilling values and using the athletic arena as an extension of the classroom. Call me naive, but I had the pleasure to play for a coach who instilled values and was highly successful both at the high school and college level. I think Coach Tressel has proven that he is of that nature.
