My son was recently at a tournament and managed to score a reversal and was in the process of recording near fall points. 1/2 second before both shoulders met the mat, the kid on bottom screamed, "Injury time!" and grabbed his shoulder. He was clearly pinned by the observation of everyone in the stands. He visited the trainer and continued the match. The kid who screamed injury time won by 1 pt.

I just wanted some feedback and when it's the proper time to yell, "Injury time!" and if it's totally up to the referee's discretion.

Unfortunately for kids in your sons position, it's (Grade, Jr High) High School......so the Refs have to err on the side of caution. I have seen kids actually coached this technique, and I know.....been there....it's a bummer.

yea it is a bummer, sad that coaches or parents would even tell there kids to do that!

If he was coached to do that, I have lost ALL respect for that school. too bad.. I used to think they were a class act..

Err on the side of caution I understand. But if there is not an obvious injury that may have happened or just seemed to happen just before being pinned, I don't understand.. This young man was winning the entire match and (if I do say so myself) my kid fought hard till the end of the match. Clearly, when the kid screamed injury, he didn't want to get pinned..

The kid was not coached to do that. Very bad decision by a boy who has varsity skills and was wrestling jv because of being deep at the middle weights. Your boy should of gotten more then 1 pt, and he should of chose to start nuetral. He would of had 30 seconds for the takedown and win. Your boy fought hard even know he was down big and deserves alot of credit.

Not sure why they started nuetral sounds like they were either wrestling some modified rules or the ref screwed it up. Now on the injury time, coming from a 13 year HS wrestling official, if injury time is requested it must be granted period! I know it sucks and have had the same thing happen myself but the referee has no choice but to stop the match and grant the injury time out!

They would have per this little thing called rules. lol!

I can see the caution part, it used to be that they would stop it, but as soon as they did and the kid was alright, they give the guy who had him on his back in a pinning combination 3 points. plus his backs he was getting. I think that is a good rule.


Biggest thing is, tell your kid good job and that youre proud of how hard he fought, but tell him next time just dont let there be any room for a loss, be better even.

Some youth tournaments start everything on their feet. I don't believe Jr. High does unless again, it's at an open tournament with such stipulation..

absolutely.. I am proud of his effort being a Frosh. Win or lose. It's all about mat time right now and getting matches.. He did fight right to the end and had a great tourney. For that I am proud.

The good thing is he's a Frosh., and this wasn't the State tourney. Just wondering is this would have happened at the State Tourney???

As a Freshman they should restart in the referees position.

They may have stopped the match at the state tourney if the kid called for injury time, but they would have started in referees position.

If this was a sanctioned OHSAA tourn. then it should have started in the advantage position. Now let me ask you this, was it the 2nd injury time out for your kids opponent and your kid chose neutral on the restart or did your kid just tell the ref neutral and give him an escape and started neutral?

no this was the first and only (cough, cough) injury time request.
After being checked by the trainer and being found to be ok, they were in referees position with my son on top...
He escaped, my son lost by 1.

My mistake I read a post wrong concerning the starting position as it was another poster that stated they should have started neutral. Can I ask you though if and how many nearfall points were awarded to your wrestler? If nearfall is imminent when the match was stopped for injury it's 2 nf points. If it's in nearfall criteria already for 2-4 seconds it would be 3 nf points when stopped for injury and if a 5 second count was achieved before stoppage for injury it would be 4 nf points.

9-9. score was right.. I just question the integrity of the injury time request and the timing of the whole thing.. It was obvious to everyone what this young man was doing..
Aren't there lessons to be learned by losing as well?

Gotcha and I'm with you I see it all the time but the referee has NO CHOICE but to stop the match when injury is requested even when we think there is no injury. Sux!

yea now that fab has broken it down i agree with the officials decision, but it does stink that it had to come down to that. Goodluck to your boy on his high endevourrs!

It has here in FL, it's a problem but I think the rules comittee has it's hands full on things like injury!! That is why they added the extra point for nf. What else can they do? The first time a kid says he's hurt and the ref doesn't stop it because the ref doesn't think the kid is really hurt well that ref may end up in court!!

The experienced officials that I know call the pinfall at that point. The bottom man then gets as much time with the trainer that he needs.....
