I am getting absolutely killed by the CPU on 3rd and long. I mean, it's borderline ridiculous. I can easily get stops on 1st and 2nd, but for some reason there's always a wide open receiver on 3rd down. What kind of defenses are you guys running on 3rd down?

I've tried zones, man coverage, nickel, but I usually run a 4-3 and just spy my MLB and drop back one DE. For some reason this seems to delay the QB. But even that isn't that effective.

oh...and good god, can the defensive line be any more worthless in this game?

fwiw...the last NCAA game I've played was 08 on PS2, haha

I don't play, but I would suggest a fire blitz, in man coverage and make sure to drop at least 1 of the blitzers into zone coverage. Take your defensive linemen and drop him back and cover the middle for crossing patterns

Against the computer you can run cover 2 man, press the Wr's and play with the free safety to control the middle of the field. They shouldnt convert a 3rd and long if you do that, unless you butcher coverage with your safety. At least thats what i would run against the computer the entire game successfully

I would love you to run that against my 5 wide.

Yeah I had problems with 3rd downs also. I would play several games where the computer's 3rd down conversion percentage would be 60-80%

Thanks for the tips. My defensive playbook is the 4-3. If I line up in the 4-3 on 3rd down it's almost always a blitz package. Bringing in the outside linebacker. A lot of the zone blitz packages have a safety coming in, but I use him to cover.. I think a lot of the problem was having the CPU suggest a play call for me. I did this a lot until I could get the flow of the defense.

Running Cover 2 and press was huge today. Don't know why I didn't think about press (d'oh). It delays it enough so I can get pressure from the defensive ends.

My tip is trade in the game lol. This year's was awful and the series is dead to me. I bought NBA jam and have been loving the blast from the past.

This

Against the CPU or online, if the opponent goes 3 wide+ I run either 2 defenses. Either Nickel Overstorm, which is man to man with both line backers blitzing inside, so 6 blitz and 5 cover. I usually make my line blitz outside in. If I'm playing someone who is a mobile qb, I run 3-2-6 Double CB Blitz. If there is a RB offset to either side, that DE drops into the flat zone coverage to protect against the screen. If it's empty, both DEs drop into flat/buzz zone, the NT drops into shallow zone, and I have 1 free LB who either drops into buzz zone, shallow zone, deep zone, or I keep him as the spy and roam with him. I play with Michigan and have a pretty decent success rate even with them. Also, I do the right analog stick thing for pass. I don't know if it helps or not, but I like to think that it does.

3rd and long I drop my corners into man coverage, MLB in zone to cover the middle and bring the pressure from every one else.

I do. Just because it's third and long doesn't mean the opposition is lining up in 5 wide. I'll use goaline defense on anything (except 5-wide; possibly on 4-wide I'll use something else, but even then I'll still go goaline sometimes.)

Against humans or is this just against the computer?

Against the computer that might work, against any competent human....Goaline would get torn apart

The OP didn't mention what team he's on.

Some teams just have terrible defenses and nothing you'll run will stop the CPU. I did a dynasty with Houston and had to outscore every opponent I played (including #110 Rice)

No way that works against anyone with any skills. Your 8 year old cousin, maybe, but that's about it.

To back up the goal line thing. I have had great success running the 4-4 vs 5 wide sets vs humans opponents, but it is high risk reward. You will get burned if you blitz too much but you can still keep everything infront of you with a 4-4. So maybe the goal line works a couple of times but if you use it as your base D you will get burned eventually.

4-4 or goaline vs 5 wide and a human opponent who knows that hes doing=Wr screen for huge yardage, or hotroute a Wr for huge yardage
