Just let them now that your seat is reclining politely. Inform them, don't ask them. I usually let them politely know that I am reclining the seat, and then do it. On time one person went into this I don't have any room schtick and I just told them that I have back problems (which is true), and that I needed to recline the seat (also true).

I'll confess to being guilty of not checking or asking when I recline my seat (I always figured it only goes back a few inches, what harm can it do?). But, yes, common courtesy.

That said, in this day of every "perk" under the sun for sale on a plane, if a person needs that precious 2 inches they should have paid to upgrade to an exit row or perhaps an aisle seat.

You are welcome.

I guess people that buy Macs aren't that smart after all.

Common courtesy dictates that one would ask the person behind them before reclining.

Of course, common courtesy would also dictate that you not let your 4-year-old stand on his seat, face backwards, and scream at the top of his lungs, especially when I'm the one behind said anklebiter. But that didn't prevent this very thing from happening about 2 1/2 years ago...

if you do, dont complain when i keep kneeing you in the back. there really isnt even a reason to have the seats recline in my opinion.

I disagree. It's definitely more comfortable. I hate sitting straight up and it makes it easier to take a little nap as well.

You REALLY need to recline your chair because you have "back problems"?

for the average person on the average flight, you can sit up for a couple hours.

Not everyone is average, for all anyone knows the person sitting in front of them just connected from a 10+ hour flight.

I don't get it. It isn't as if the recline infringes on your space aside from (i) one trying to get up and go to the aisle or (ii) one's airspace above the tray table. If it is really bothersome, people can purchase a business class ticket or complain to the airline. Didn't one airline advertise more space in coach before (AA if I recall correctly)? And it went over like a lead balloon. People will buy the cheapest ticket.
