I think I've reached a point where I want to start combating the trolls. I see pro's and con's in letting them be as well as pro's and con's in cleaning it up and making the forums more enjoyable for everyone.

I don't, however, just want to start banning trolls. I want to devise some sort of system for battling these morons. Kind of like the current infraction/warning system.

If someone makes a troll post that was clearly meant to piss people off (I don't mind "joke" trolling, I think we all know the difference) they would receive a warning. The next troll post would get a "troll" point. After 2 or 3 points they would be labeled a troll. By being labeled a troll they lose control of their avatar and signature. Their avatar would be changed to some sort of troll image (see below, a different image for each troll) and their signature would be replaced with some sort of message (same message for every troll).

Once a troll hits a certain number of troll points we put their fate up to the forum. We put up a poll and give it 3 or 4 days. If the general populations votes them out they are banned. If they reregister we ban them again. And again. Eventually they will give up.

Mission accomplished!

I've never had a good idea and this is no exception.

I like. I like.

I'm also surprised. Since this is a Sunday and the Browns played today, I fully expected to see about 40587320 threads on here by Like That and CoA demanding action be taken against people for saying ANYTHING remotely negative about the Browns. Even though 2/3 of those negative posts were directly in response to them making a "you FAIL" comment towards someone.

I like the idea. It should temper their trolling efforts.

I am not opposed. I think we should be careful with this though and save it for the worst offenders.

Strapping Young Lad. I've noticed that he's on the Steelers-Buffalo thread today. I'm hoping beyond hope that he makes a "pedophile" comment towards Capone, just so I can mod him.

He's not really a major problem, as the only person he trolls is Capone. Just one that annoys me as he does troll Pittsburgh teams with babbling that's on the Capone intellectual scale. But not as often as Capone trolls Cleveland.

Count me in as another that thinks CoA and Like_That will be reasonable posters mostly once Capone/trolls get taken care of.

This is the main flaw that I see with the problem. "Likeable" trolls such as sleeper will be allowed to troll and seemingly be given permission. We could see general "approval" of pro-OSU or pro-Ohio based team trolls while only getting ride of "anti-Ohio" trolls.

I think the poll is a nice system... but we employ a check/balance system.

If the public for whatever reason deems a certain troll as "acceptable" than if the moderators come to a 3/4 vote (or some higher standard) we can ban the troll anyways.

Just got this PM from Capone:
To the Honorable Justin:
Here's a possible solution to the trolls like myself. Is it possible to create a troll forum on the site. Call it what you want ''the armpit of ohio chatter'' sounds good. Delete all troll posts in the regular forums and send them there. If someone wants to knock the Browns, Steelers, Notre Dame etc they can go there to do it. If someone wants to join the fight they can, if they dont they dont have to. Would be some good reading and humor if nothing else. Other possible names:
The Hate Locker
Troll Heaven
Justins Junk Yard
It's not a bad idea, actually. Sort of similar to the "anything goes" type of forum that I mentioned a while ago.

You could also combine this with your current idea.

Instead of reaching a ban point, if a person "trolls" in normal no trolling forums, they receive infractions and eventually have their posting rights limited to the troll only forum.

I'm not sure why we should cater to trolls. My god, if they can't put a competent post together, why continue to give them a place to post??

You don't necessarily cater to trolls... but they do bring people to the forum as well as drive people away. Trolls = controversy = more people responding.

But they also have the tendency to drive people away if they are too ubiquitous... which is why i like Capone's idea. For those who want to be infuriated and banter with trolls, they can go to that area. But if you don't want to deal with that shit... don't go there.

The other problem when dealing with trolls is figuring out how to "regulate" them without being too subjective and seemingly unfair.

With this idea, we just give them that forum to troll in. If they troll elsewhere, regardless of who they root for or if we like them or not, they get a troll infraction. After 2 they can only post in the troll forum for a month or whatever.

I say that we just call all women trolls since they have no business being on the interwebz.

Becareful, SEJ might still be lurking somewhere ready to give you troll infraction points.
