Agree with you there. Im too young to say I watched him play, but I heard plenty of stories to justify that he was a good one and probably on the list that I would no longer call the Top 10...lets just call it The Long List of Great Red Rider Football Players....or simply TRADITION!

Exactly! this brings up an entire era....full of great players. And what about the teams in the late 60's that gave up..what..20 points in the entire year? they were obviously scattered with some greats. Darn near impossible to come up with a consensus top ten. Heck we would be better trying to come up with a top ten at EACH position. We might be able to get somewhere then. What do you thin Red Rider Nation?

Lowell Geiser (QB), Chub Bradford (Line), Hoss Houmard (RB), Bobby Howard (RB)...all played before 1970, and except for Geiser, all played before the 1960's.

Dont think losses against Wooster and losses in the playoffs should impact what is considered a great player....certainly in cases like Mark Griggs...success against Wooster defines a legacy...but it shouldn't detract from anyone's.

I think there are to many to list only a top 10 alltime. You almost have to look decade by decade and even then it would be hard to just list 10 in a decade. So many names just being added to the discussion. The older you are the more greats you remember. What a lot of tradition and athletes there is in Red Rider history!!!
Just looking at the records page in the program and seeing names like Brad Thomas 1102 yards receiving, Tony McMorrow 25 carreer sacks , 14 in a season, Tom Reusser 3rd in all purpose yards, Chad Teague 2nd carreer scorer, Todd Scott 25 carreer interceptions.
I am curious on some single game records that aren't in the program , like most yards rushing or passing in a game.

Looks like a great offseason topic when we have some time to sit and think about it.

The 1968 year was when we only allowed 20 points and 6 were in the Wooster game. Mark Reiheld, Larry Johnson, Doug Barnett, Dave Vodika and a bunch of other real decent HS players.

haha good reading guys! Every single one of those players were outstanding in the Orrville uniforms and deserve the recognition for the careers they had here.

I have a solution to this debate.....

I call it Red Rider Football Tradition and it is Second to None! Every person that puts that Orrville uniform on is important to the team's success and it is a privilege to play on the team. When you are in elementary school you want to be like those boys in the Red Rider uniform and at recess everyone picks a player they want to be for the all important 2-hand touch football game everyday after lunch....I remember when I was in elementary school I wanted to be like Justin Zwick and Bjorn Boggs while my friends were Michael and Dru Robinson, Joel Beichler, Andy Lorson, Thad Tillison, Demarcus Robinson, Ben Stocker, Tom Fowkes etc Those boys won a state championship...the list goes on and on and it comes down to one thing.....RTR!

I was a couple years ahead of coondog......no offense to him, but not in the argument for this list imo.

Agree.

IF Justin Zwick had stayed for all 4 years he would be a no-brainer for the list. What he did in just 2 seasons was pretty phenominal...especially being a starting QB as a frosh!

With all due respect( I think of Ricky Bobby every time I say that!) to Justin....he stepped into a dream spot. POY at tailback...phenomenal line in front of him...maybe the best ever? Receiving corps...etc...He had to manage the games, not win them like Simmons. To have the maturity to go the distance as a frosh though is an impressive achievement indeed.

This is fun stuff. I love having all these names brought up, I can picture big games these guys won for the Riders. Kind of gets the cob webs out certain parts of the brain.

Well then if you want more names, lets see how good you are 5K ...LOL!

Tom Troyer
Brandon Bowman

..any ring a bell? They weren't the greats that have been mentioned, but played significant roles on a GREAT team!

Here are a few more that I really have to stretch my age and memory..but I will try.
Davidoff
V. Schrock
Tillison
...these were another three that I remeber as maybe not the "greats" but played huge roles on a teams success

I have to agree about JZ. Remember he came in at the age of a Soph and in perhaps the best role a qb could possibly step into. That offensive line needs to be mentioned in the RTR discussion. The Brents were pretty phenomenal and the heart and determination of Fowkes and Curtis was the definition of Red Rider Tradition. Todd Scott is tied for 3rd in the state with his 25 career picks en route to playing for the Bucks. He would have to be put in anyones top 10 regardless of era. Good stuff. We truly are blessed here. The off-season discussion on this topic could go on til next season, especially if you throw in favorite plays.

BTW, we did have another playoff game in Youngstown against Liberty in '04. I remember the Struthers game all too well.
