It's going to be even worse at Wrigley... it's so close to the field that they couldn't even use a stanchion on the goalpost or it would have been hanging over the end zone. At least at SBC Park they had a couple of feet to work with.

Looks like they may have padded the wall in the above picture? That Allstate ad with the ivy background looks like padding. It's still going to hurt like hell if you hit it.

What makes it more odd is it's a completely different configuration than used historically for the Bears, they always ran it the other way (1B dugout to LF wall) and there was more room. They haven't added any seats or messed with dimensions that would really necessitate a change.

Check this out, the front of Wrigley has been converted to be all Wildcat. They're even painting the marquee purple! Here's a live webcam feed.

from this picture, it looks like there was never much room

and while i was looking for the picture, i found this tidbit on wikipedia
The football field ran north-to-south, i.e. from left field to the foul side of first base. The remodeling of the bleachers made for a very tight fit for the gridiron. In fact, the corner of the south end zone was literally in the visiting baseball team's dugout, which was filled with pads for safety, and required a special ground rule that sliced off that corner of the end zone. One corner of the north end line ran just inches short of the left field wall. There is a legend that Bronko Nagurski, the great Bears fullback, steamrolled through the line, head down, and ran all the way through that end zone, smacking his leather-helmeted head on the bricks. He went back to the bench and told Coach "Papa Bear" George Halas, "That last guy gave me quite a lick!" That kind of incident prompted the Bears to hang some padding in front of the wall

There definitely wasn't much more room, but a couple feet behind the end line beats the about 6 inches they have this coming weekend.
It generally just seems like a bad idea to play there at all, honestly. Sure, it's historic... but the damn field doesn't fit! lol

A limited number of Standing Room tickets will go on sale Tuesday. $175 a piece. Probably a good sign the game is sold out.

^^^^

that's truly shocking they're going to get that price.

and the goal post looks truly dangerous. When you think about it, the fact that it almost looks shorter along the edge before the wall turns, the outcome of the game could be severely affected in the 4th quarter. It totally changes your play-calling

I think I may wander on over there on Saturday morning; Gophers have a bye week so it may be a good morning to go and soak in the atmosphere. Maybe get some thanks from Illini fans for putting the nail in Zook's coffin last week :)

Sorry, it's not my image. I got it off of Twitter and it was much smaller when I copied the location, but the TwitPic site obviously made it smaller and I'm too lazy to upload it to photobucket and resize it.

the other endzone backs up to the dugout.... both teams said they will change their gameplans because of the field... as a player would you like to run a fade route to the corner of the endzone if ur going to running into a dugout and breaking ur neck

As a NU fan, I'm obviously thrilled to see this. It's a shame, though, that Persa is out for the season with an injury. He was perhaps the most underrated player in the Big 10--his numbers were really impressive, especially considering his supporting cast.

As a Buckeye fan I'm bummed that he's out too. He was our best hope of Wisconsin losing sending us to Pasadena!

UPDATE: Only one endzone will be used during the Illinois/Northwestern game: http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/ncf/news/story?id=5824661

Ridiculous that that had to happen. And I can't imagine how pissed the people who have seats in the east endzone must be.

Exactly, I think it's the right decision now but c'mon ... they had to figure this one out in the PLANNING stages, not a day before the game. Northwestern .. you're smarter than that.

This is the first college football game in Wrigley in nearly 70 years and I'm pretty sure that this will be the last ever football game in Wrigley.
