The site I use to get odds for vbookie doesn't have the Auburn/Georgia game listed right now. When I started the thread at 11:45 today, it had Auburn as a 8.5 point favorite.

What I would like to know is who are the sources ESPN is using for this story?? They say its 2 Mississippi State recruiters. Considering the NCAA limits who can technically recruit, it shouldn't be too difficult to identify, right? Mullen, QB coach, maybe offensive coordinator?
Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen said that he and his assistants are the only people on the Bulldogs staff registered with the NCAA as recruiters, but he sidestepped other questions Wednesday about the latest allegation against Newton.

Like I said earlier, the best thing for everyone is if the NCAA closes this issue by November 28, because Championship Saturday is December 4. That would give another team like LSU a chance to prepare for the SEC title game in place of Auburn, becuase if this is found to be true Newton will be declared ineligible for this season and any game he played in will be forfeited. If they finished undefeated and then a ruling is handed down before the title game it would be a mess. Obviously they wouldn't be allowed to play in the title game at that point because they would technically be 0-13. What would happen at that point? Would the #3 team move up into that slot? Would they re-vote and re-calculate the computer polls without Auburn to determine the new teams? If they did this they would have to re-shift the rest of the bowl teams around, which wouldn't only affect the BCS bowls, but a lot of bowls because whatever team gets left out of a BCS bowl (likely Stanford or Boise State) would be called up to fill a vacancy, and then that bowl would have to fill a spot and on down. It would be a disaster. So then maybe you still let Auburn play in the game without Newton, but Oregon (or whoever they play) would already be guaranteed the championship before the game. But that wouldn't be fair if TCU and Boise are still undefeated, because who is to say that they wouldn't beat Oregon is they were in the game instead of Auburn. Or what if Auburn still won? Basically, the NCAA needs to resolve this one way or another withing the next two-and-a-half weeks or they will have a huge mess to deal with.

I agree. They need to something ASAP because there are so many different ways this can play out depending on when/what their verdict is. I may be exaggerating but the present and future of NCAA Football rests on their investigation.

Mississippi State contacted SEC office
Here's the full Mississippi State release, which almost seems to be taking up for the SEC at the end:

not even sure I understand this report. Looks like they just never had hard evidence until July.

I don't think you're exaggerating. The NCAA really is at a crossroads right now and is proving more and more by the day how ineffective it is. The NCAA only has the power that it's member's give it. It has no real investigative power because it has no legal right to subpoena. The NCAA has grown so large that it has become extremely inneficient because the channels than things have to go through pass through too many hands. The NCAA rarely gets things done in a timely manner and therefore it's punishments for those who break the rules rarely affect the actual rule breakers and end up punishing the innocent after the fact. Also, with the possibility that super conferences are coming it is possible that the NCAA may not exist in 20 years. This case can set a precedent, or it could be more of the status quo to prove yet again how inefficient and ineffective the NCAA is.

MSU: Hey, Auburn stole that great player from us. They must be cheating!!! SEC DO SOMETHING!!!
SEC: Okay, prove it.
MSU: Well, I'm really busy now...
*crickets*
6 months go by
MSU: Here's more people agreeing with us that Auburn cheated.
SEC: Okay, why don't you go have a seat over there?

fwiw--Lou Holtz said on Mike and Mike this morning that he's concerned that this Newton thing is heading for a bad ending, simply because when things like this are purely conjecture, they fizzle out quickly, but this seems to be picking up steam.

SEC spokesman says that the phone calls were not reported to them by MSU in January or July. Someone (Dan Mullen and staff) is lying and got caught. Where is Gibby to tell us what a great guy he is?

Bodog just took Heisman betting off of their boards because of the Cam Newton allegations.

No. At least, I don't think so. But I don't see why he couldn't sue Joe Schad's sources, assuming they are ever revealed.thedynasty1998;554057 wrote:Can Newton now file a defamation of character suit against ESPN?
I find it funny how MSU could now be in trouble for having recruiters who aren't technically recruiters. This could be the implosion of the SEC west.

i also find it funny that there is nothing like the SBB story on ESPN.com.
I know it's egg on their face potentially, but if the SEC is finally addressing this, ESPN should report it.

LOL, quick to file suits, eh? In Ohio, there would be a number of problems with the potential libel/slander suit. For one, Cam Newton is likely a public figure, and therefore, there must be proof of actual malice.
I would be surprised of the law wasn't similar in Connecticut.

Can you point me in the direction to which it mentions they "fizzle out quickly"?
