Ohio’s All-Time High School Football Team

The players making first- and second-team all-time All-Ohio includes offensive and defensive legends, with special team superstars and a huge and stunning honorable mention list.



I would start with LeBron James, twice an All-Ohio receiver before not playing his senior year. National recruiting analyst Tom Lemming said James would’ve been the No. 1 prospect in the nation his senior year had he played football. Makes me want to add LeBron as an addendum.

One Heisman Trophy winner, Troy Smith, didn’t make it. He shared the quarterback job his junior year at Lakewood St. Edward, and completed 42 percent of his passes his senior year at Glenville, not enough to make this team.

Likewise, one No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft didn’t make it, “Big Daddy” Dan Wilkinson was such a high school project out of Dayton he had to redshirt at Ohio State.

Receiver Terry Glenn, who won the Biletnikoff Award at Ohio State, isn’t on the team either. He was a walk-on out of Brookhaven, and had a teammate, Marlon Kerner, who was a much better high school player. Kerner isn’t here either.

In Mansfield, don’t look for Hugh Douglas. The NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1995 wasn’t all-conference as a prep performer.

Some kids won Mr. Football and didn’t make it.

Two of Grantland Rice’s immortal Four Horseman at Notre Dame were from Ohio. Knute Rockne called Don Miller the greatest open field runner he ever coached. Unfortunately, Miller sat the bench and barely played at Defiance High School. Can’t have benchwarmers on this team.

The other one, quarterback Harry Stuhldreher, hailed from Massillon, but played his senior year at Kiski Prep in Pennsylvania. He wound up an honorable mention selection because he was a significant player for the Tigers.

Len Dawson is a Pro Football Hall of Famer who was a gunslinger at Alliance in the early 1950s, before the term was applied to quarterbacks. Dawson was ahead of his time, and an honorable-mention pick here, but I simply couldn’t rate him ahead of two other superb high school quarterbacks, Art Schlichter and Roger Staubach. That’s the kind of competition we’re talking about.







Obviously, Ohio State has long feasted on this array of talent, but Ohio schoolboys have fueled lots of other college programs, too. Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State, Nebraska, USC, UCLA, Navy, Duke, Toledo, Miami of Ohio and Bucknell all have youngsters on this first or second team.

If you see a name and don’t recognize it, Google it, you’re probably in for a great story.



That’s a typical tale on this team.

Whoever made the list should have looked a little deeper into the past history....as this list seems really front loaded with more recent players.

Seeing as how this list was based mostly on High School accomplishments, and they used the word "legend", you'd also have an argument for Zach Collaros.

MASSILLON — Thom McDaniels isn’t worrying himself about how people view him.

To him, it doesn’t matter that he was a McKinley Bulldog, or a Warren Harding Raider or a Jackson Polar Bear or even a Solon Comet.

The only thing McDaniels considers himself right now is a Massillon Tiger.

“I think it matters to die-hard fans in Canton and Massillon,” said McDaniels, whose hiring as an assistant football coach for the Tigers was approved by the Massillon Board of Education on Wednesday evening. “I think it matters to people who went to one school or the other. I don’t think it matters to coaches.

“I think that, really, coaches like (Solon’s) Jim McQuaide and (Massillon’s) Jason Hall, they’re looking for good guys to help them manage and run their programs. I think it’s largely insignificant to them where the guys have been who are going to work for them.”

McDaniels, obviously, made his name as the head coach of the Tigers’ archrival, the McKinley Bulldogs. From 1982-97, he guided McKinley to 134 wins — including an 11-6 record against the Tigers — and the 1997 Division I state championship.

He also spent several years at Warren Harding, leading the Raiders to 63 wins and a 2002 state runner-up finish.

“I understand the Massillon situation very well, having competed against them at McKinley and Warren Harding,” McDaniels said. “I have great respect for it and high regard for it. I think that, in part, is what made me successful in time against the Tigers.”

It is that past successes, not just against Massillon, but as a head coach in general, that made McDaniels a hot target for Hall almost from the time he arrived in Tigertown in 2008. Hall tried to hire McDaniels following the 2008 season, but McDaniels was unable to commit due to concerns over his parents’ health.

He spent the last two seasons at Solon as an assistant under McQuaide. But, with his parents’ health having improved, he jumped at Hall’s offer.

The fourth-year Tiger coach, for one, is more than happy to have McDaniels now on board.

“It’s exciting to get someone of Thom’s caliber,” Hall said Wednesday evening. “Like I’ve said before, myself and Thom are good friends. I consider him a mentor. ... Anytime you can add somebody like that to your staff, it just speaks volumes, especially with instant credibility.”

McDaniels is expected to assume a key role on the offensive side of the ball, although neither he nor Hall would state exactly what that role would be outside of as a quarterbacks coach. To the veteran coach, though, the exact title is the least of his concerns.

"That’s something that Jason and I have discussed,” McDaniels said. “He knows that at this point in my life, titles are insignificant. Whether I have one or don’t have one is doesn’t matter to me. I think Jason’s OK with that.

“Having responsibility and having input and having a chance to make a difference, that matters more to me. I don’t know beyond the quarterbacks coach what my title will be. I know he wants to do some of what I know how to do offensively, and we’re going to try and implement that. We’re going to try and blend systems and philosophies. ... It’s an ongoing process.”

One thing that McDaniels does know is he’s anxious to get a chance to work with the Tigers’ group of quarterbacks, specifically Kyle Kempt and Brody Tonn. Kempt took over for Tonn in the middle of the Tigers’ third game last fall and started the final eight games of the season.

“The whole time I’ve been a head coach, I’ve coached quarterbacks,” McDaniels said. “It’s what I do. ... I love the game of football, but within my love for the game of football, I really love working with quarterbacks. I think it’s position that requires a lot of work, a lot of detail, a lot of concentration and a lot of time. Everything I know about the kids I’m going to work with in Massillon ... I look forward to it."

Massillon returns 138 rushing attempts for 642 yards and 10 touchdowns, led by Kentrell Taylors 71 att. 346 yds and 6 td's

They also return 28 catches for 283 yards and 3 touchdowns, led by Ryan Rambo's 3 for 54 and 1 td. On offense, this is probably the most inexperienced area, but there is alot of talent to step in, including last years back up qb Brody Tonn.

They return 154 completions, 281 attempts, for 2,363 yards and 21 td's with 12 int's, all by sophomores. Led by Kyle Kempts 111 of 205 for 1,643 14 td's and 4 int's. This group, which will include promising incoming sophomore D.J. Brown, will be mentored by Thom McDanials this season.

Defensively, Massillon will return 111 solo tackles and 124 assisted tackles, with Sr's to be Alex Winters (S) 24/30, Robbie Plants (OLB) 22/31, and Garrett Kreiger (S) 25/24, leading the way.

First, I'm not crazy about the stance Massillon has taken on playing parochials, I have always enjoyed when we played the likes of Moeller, Ignatius, Elder and St. Edward.

Second, I do however understand the stance, and agree with it.

Why should we play a school, any school, that has an unfair advantage over us? Massillon is not the first school to take this stance, but I do believe they are being used as the poster child by the rest of the states publics, (the majority anyway).

Massillon has proven they will play anybody....anywhere....any time, parochial or not.

Benedictine was a constant on Massillons schedule throughout the 70s, and Ursuline in the early 70s.

St. V. and St. Joe were constants on Massillons schedule throughout the 80s.

Moeller beat us in the 80 state title game and we scheduled them for week #3 in 81.

St. Ignatius spent 10 years on our schedule.

I believe you are correct about Massillon not playing them, but based your posting history, you're trying to make it look like Massillon is scared, when actually they are making a stand....And I applaud them for it.

In the previous decade Massillon has played

Ignatius 10 times.
St. Ed 3 times. (also in 99)
Cham-Jul. 2 times
Benedictine 2 times
Ursuline 2 times

The last three just happened to want on the schedule while fielding some of their best teams ever.
