Not only did Kent lose to Temple today, but Missouri and Alabama who both have coaches who graduated from KSU, lost.

Hopefully that isnt you on the ground. Seriously fwk, can you share your experience from that day. I enjoy American history and that would be interesting to hear.

I'm 62. I was a senior at Kent State in 1970.

The problem started on Thursday night, April 30, 1970, when Nixon announced he was sending troops into Cambodia. By the next night students were protesting all over the country.

In 1970, 18-year-olds could drink, and the bar scene in the city of Kent was very big. College students from YSU and Akron and Cleveland State and all over would come to Kent on weekends to party. This particular weekend was the first good weather of the spring and the town was packed with students angry over Nixon’s announcement.

During the weekend there were all kinds of riots in Kent. Several downtown buildings were burnt, as well as the ROTC building on campus. Gov. James Rhodes ordered the National Guard to come on campus and bring order.

On Monday morning, a large group of students was protesting on the Commons, a grassy area in the middle of campus. The National Guard was also there. Around noon the National Guard started firing on the students. To this day we don’t know for sure if they were given an order to fire or if it just happened spontaneously. At any rate, 13 students were hit, and four of them died. One student got struck in the back and became permanently paralyzed.

My own part of this story is minimal because I observed from a distance and was not a participant. I had spent the weekend studying for a major mid-term that was to take place Monday morning. It was cancelled. One of my classmates from that same class who also lived in the same dorm as me was one of the students shot. Had I been with him, I might also have gotten a bullet.

Classes were cancelled for the rest of the quarter and we were all ordered to leave the campus. I came back three weeks later to collect my things. I was nearly arrested for parking in the music building parking lot when I went to clean out my locker in the music building.

Things were very tense during the summer and fall sessions. Classes and football games were constantly disrupted because of bomb threats.

I blame Nixon for all this trouble. He apparently contacted Rhodes and told him to make an example of Kent State. Those two assholes nearly started a civil war.

National Guard - 4
Kent State - 0

This sign was in a window my first day moving into the dorms at Kent. It was then I knew I'd fit right in. Little did I know about KGLF.

If you think losing a football game is the same as having 13 students shot, then you're sick!

13 hippies who were where they didn't belong. My uncle was a junior and was at the library studying.

No bullets came anywhere near him.

This is by far the most famous picture from that day - it won a Pulitzer, IIRC. Other than the dead student, what is significant about it?

is it that's this is a 14 year old runaway that's kneeling over the body, or that this is the unedited version of the pic, NOT the one that was in Life Magazine??

The answer to mine is that the kneeling and grieving girl was a 14-yr-old runaway who had no business being there in the first place.

to my knowledge, yes...and I was going to answer about the 14 year old, but wasn't sure if that's what you were going for..btw, she sure doesn't look 14 though, does she :o
