I heard a couple days ago ESPN Insider rumor is they want Randy Shannon. I bet Minn. changed their mind today.

I would have to look long and hard at either Frank Solich from OU or Gary Patterson from TCU. Assuming Patterson would leave TCU, he'd have to be my guy if I was the Minnesota AD. His teams ALWAYS have a fantastic defense and he brings a winning tradition and attitude, and you never hear about tons of kids getting in to trouble with him. He comes from a great program who does things the right way at TCU. I would think with the facilities and the nice city, as well as nice salary increase, may entice him to look at Minnesota.

Patterson's getting $2.5 mil/year from TCU. That's about the max that Minnesota would pay him, so I doubt he's leaving. Not to mention, they courted him w/ $2 mil/year during the last coaching search and he wouldn't budge. The top candidates, as far as I'm concerned, are:

Mike Bellotti
Mike Stoops
Al Golden
Kevin Sumlin
Mike Leach (crazy insane-o candidate, due to history)
John Harbaugh (crazy insane-o candidate, due to probably other job offers)


I'd be happy with any of them. That said, the Minnesota admin has come out and said they're willing to put their money where their mouths are in this hire. I have yet to see if it's true, or if it's lip service (and, given the history of the past 40 years, I'm leaning toward lip service), but maybe it's true. I hope to hell it's true. That school, my alma mater, has too much to offer to be this consistently bad.

FWIW, I do not want Randy Shannon. He has underachieved with consistently better talent at Miami than he will get at Minnesota.

Al Golden would be a good pick, he's done well at Temple and has a history with academic-oriented schools. I don't see Bellotti going back into coaching, and Stoops has too good of a thing going in Tuscon.

Stoops is getting paid (relative) peanuts out in Zona though ($1m/season), that's the one thing that could lure him away. If the Gophers come with $2-$2.5 mil, he, as a midwest guy, would probably have a tough time turning it down.

That's a good list. I have to believe the guy Minnesota could must likely land is Stoops. All the others are in line for better coach gigs (no offense). Golden, Sumlin and Harbaugh will be coaching at traditional power house schools in the next two years (maybe even by next season). Leach is going to be a guy that many schools in BCS conferences will take a chance on just because of the excitement he brings and the fact the guy wins. I can see him coaching in the P10, ACC or possibly the BE next year. He would take those jobs over the Gophers because it would be easier routes to a conference title (face it, even if he comes to Minnesota and does well they will struggle to finish better than 4th most seasons).

Is that a salary that Minnesota is going to come up with though? Especially if it is guaranteed? That figure is enough to put the coach into the top 10-15 paid coaches in the nation and only a few of those guys are guaranteed a salary that large. They're all at elite football programs. The others that make that much have salaries sub-1 million but get incentives that get them up there in pay.

^^^ Interesting. I know Fulmer has been trying to get back into coaching the past few years. The only thing I would be leery about if I were a Minnesota fan would be the fact he is from the South and would expect he would bolt to the ACC/SEC/B12 the first chance he would get.

Solich is too old and while he has turned the Bobcats around, I highly doubt Minnesota would be interested.

Dan Hawkins (former Boise State coach who dominated and current Colorado coach who is awful) might make it hard for another Boise State coach to get a job in a BCS conference. And if they do get one it will be because the team is in desperation mode and willing to take a huge gamble.

Rodriquez and Kelly will both be looking for jobs in 3 weeks. But Kelly might not be available for 3 - 5yrs (depending on good behavior).

I either heard Lachey or Krenzel say that they heard Minny was going to go big on a coach. They said they look for the person hired to be a top 15 or so paid coach. With that said, my list would be.

1. Patterson
2. Stoops
3. Fulmer
4. Leake

Tough job for whoever gets the job. I believe for Minny to suceed they may need a Mike Leake type offense or a Patterson type defense.

It is nice that Minnesota is aiming high, but I question just how attractive a job it actually is. The program has been pretty bad for a while. What Glenn Mason did there appears to be the ceiling for the program, and he got canned.

I gotta think a competent coach could get them to a New Year's bowl game within 5 years. If the coach makes a great effort to keep the top in-state players at home (Floyd at ND, Gilreath at Wisconsin, Sorensen at Wisconsin, Anderson at Wisconsin, Binns at Iowa, Klug at Iowa, Henderson at Miami, Robinson at Iowa State, McNeal at Clemson) there will be a nucleus of talent to build around similar to what you see at Iowa and Wisconsin. Remember, before Alvarez got to Wisconsin they were shedding fans quickly and his predecessor (Don Morton) was 6-27 over three seasons. The turnaround can be done, and there is no mythical glass ceiling for the program, as long as the support from the institution is there and the right hire is made.

How good is HS football in Minnesota? Where do they get their talent from?

I really don't know and that will be telling.

Minneapolis is a great city for Big 10 standards and by all accounts their facilities are amazing, so those are two advantages they should have in recruiting. But if you are only getting average talent in Minnesota, it will be hard to go into surrounding states to steal away talent.

Minnesota produces about the same amount of D-I talent as Wisconsin, and more than Iowa, in an average year. The HS football isn't great but there have been some really good college players to come out of their high schools in the past 20 years (Marion Barber, Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Floyd, Seantrel Henderson, James Laurinaitis, Matt Birk, Chris Weinke) and some solid contributers (Dominique Barber, Dominique Byrd, John Carlson) to believe that if the top talent stays at home the majority of the time, a nucleus could be built.
