Of those of you who have permanently cut the cord (as the either the fledgling or the parent), how many left under amiable circumstance - and how were involved in a situation in which one party was "encouraged" to strike out on their own?

I had the american dream......knocked up my girlfriend and decided to get a job and do the family thing.

Even though I was an idiot...my parents were more than supportive through the whole ordeal.

I was asked to move out when I was 18 because I was setting a bad example for my 3 younger sisters by partying down on campus 3 or 4 nights a week. I was already working a good full-time job, so I didn't mind.

When I left for college, I boxed everything up and put it in storage. I came back for the first two summers, but after that, I found my own place and lived on my own.

I went away to college and came home after my freshman year. The next year, I talked with a buddy about getting an apartment for our junior year, and my parents (mom in particular) weren't too happy about it. They knew if I got the apartment I was never coming home. Dad said if I wanted to sign the lease I could...but that was it, I would have to do it all on my own. I got the apartment, and have been on my own supporting myself ever since.

So for the most part, it was a pretty amicable move.

I left for the military after HS in 94. I needed to get out of my small town and my parents didn't have alot of money. Had plenty of wrestling scholarships on the table but to be honest I needed dicipline bad as I was heading for a path of destruction so I opted to join and wrestle in the Navy. I love may parents, RIP Pops, but since then I have supported myself ever since. Makes me feel good I haven't had to go to my parents for really anything after I left, I was able to make it and they didn't have to fork out anymore of their hard earned money to support me. Now my brother and sister that is a different story!!!!

I moved away to college @ 17, and stayed at my parents during the next 3 summers. I ended up getting an apt w/ a buddy when I turned 20. My parents would've NEVER asked me to move out, but I felt it was time to get out for good. I moved on very good terms.

I went away for college for 2 years and transferred back home due to bad grades. I am currently enrolled in school full time and work full time but am living with my parents. I will move out when I graduate(next semester) and get good paying job. I don't mind living at home because its free and I am only home for a hour or two then I go to sleep. With my busy schedule and partying/hanging out with friends in my free time I see no reason to be paying for an apartment. I can seriously can go a week without seeing my parents because I am up before they leave and I don't come home until they are in bed.

I still live with my parents. I commute to school. Saves money, fridge is stocked, Mom likes me being around. It'll probably stay like this through my undergrad unless something changes or some of my friends find a housing situation that's really hard to pass up.

Didn't technically move out until graduating from college but I was only there for summers and 2 summers I had jobs that took me out of town every week. A week after I graduated I packed up and moved to Indiana for my first job.

Went to college right after high school. Went home for the next summer but stayed in my own apartment after sophomore year and am currently a junior and my parents welcome me when ever I feel like coming home. Hoping I get and internship somewhere this summer so I won't have to live another summer in Washington Court House.

My mother asked my ex step dad for a divorce on my 18th birthday.2 weeks later I found out my girlfriend(wife to be on Nov 12) was pregnant.. About a month later I was told on a Tuesday to get out by Friday because I was costing him to much money.

Have been living at home the past 3 summers but I go to school 3 hrs away so I'm out of the house for about 9 months out of the year. Probably out for good this summer if I get a GA job and move to take it

Lol. Yes it was "amiable".

Left for college at 18 and only returned to visit. Isn't that when most people leave?

One year of college, and a trip to Iraq did it for me. Decision was mutual.

had a knock down drag out regarding the feasablilty of time travel and whether Chaplin was really a virtuoso ground-breaking filmmaker, or a socialist menace. After letting it all air out and get too personal, had no choice but to leave. Was an itinerant wandering Kung Fu vigilante throughout the west for a number of years. Then one day, was shooting at some food...up from the ground came bubbling crude. Moved to Beverly, Hills that is. Swam in cement pond. Things got messy with Lohan and a coke fueled Thursday night. And that brings us up to date.

Always "lived" with my parents until I got my first real job, however the amount of time I spent there dwindled as I got older. Summers b/t Freshman through Junior years of college, I worked at a Summer camp, from that point on, I lived at college in the Summers. Graduated and lived with the parents for 5 months while I substitute taught and golfed on my off days. Moved in with a friend for June-August, started my first teaching job at the end of August, 6 years ago. Now in my 7th year.

By the time I was 21, I had gone to college, earned my Bachelor's, found my full-time career, and got a new car. All of my major mid-term goals had been met (on my own terms/funds, not my parents') other than living on my own, so I decided to buy my own house. So it was more of a thing to reach my personal goals of accomplishment and to move forward in the "real world", plus I had always looked forward to living on my own. It's been over a year, now.

I think you should be an economic motivational speaker to high schools, and I'm not kidding. Want to make the trip to some of my business classes?

I moved out when I went to college. I spent the first 2 summers at home and then lived in Toledo full time for 4 years. I live at home right now...and honestly I love it, lol. I am hoping to move out by next Summer, though. My parents have always been supportive of my decisions. They were understanding when I had to move back home but will be very happy when I leave, lol. Wildcats and I are planning to move in together but one of us will have to move and find a new job...so that will take some time.
