Bruce Springsteen is truly unbelievable. I've never been a huge fan. I know all the classics. And the dude wrote a song about Youngstown. But I watched a documentary about him a few days ago and I have to admit, after listening to a lot of his music I am truly starting to see why so many people hold him in such high regard. 4 decades of music, and the dude is still churning out good songs, even in the past few years (Working on a Dream, The Wrestler, The Rising......I actually consider the Rising one of his better songs).

During the documentary, Steven Van Zandt (Silvio from the Sopranos) said something that kinda struck me. He said that IF he wanted to be, Bruce Springsteen would have been the greatest pop song writer of all time. Simply because of the shear number of great songs he wrote that he never released, his own songs, and the songs that were hits with other artists (Blinded By the Light, Because the Night). For one album (Darkness on the Edge of Town) he wrote over NINETY songs.

So the question is: Is he one of the all time greatest artists/entertainers of all time? Is he THE greatest?

Surely very few artists have been as popular worldwide AND had the longevity of Springsteen. Elvis was great but died much too young. The Beatles were great and put out a huge quantity of great music in a very short period, but failed to linger beyond one decade. Michael Jackson was awesome and ruled a decade, but fizzled out in the 90's and died too young as well. U2 hasn't been around quite as long as Springsteen (barely) but have sold more records all-time than Springsteen.

Is he THE greatest enduring American music legend? His songs ARE America, and its hard to argue with that if you've really listened to what he truly sings about, both good (Born to Run, Born in the USA, Glory Days) and bad (Youngstown, Atlantic City).

So? What do you think?

Off topic I know, but still pretty crazy and funny...

Friend of a friend at Boston College: Oh, hey roommate! My name is anonymous, yours?

Evan Springsteen: Evan Springsteen.

Friend of a friend: Oh, cool. Any relation to Bruce per chance..? hahah

Evan Springsteen: ..yeah.

**In walks Bruce Springsteen carrying some boxes into the dorm room**

Friend of a friend: .................................................oh my god.

My dad loves him, he used to play his music almost daily and has pretty much burned me out from listening to him. I actually cannot stand his music, however I do recognize his musical prowess. He is known for playing 4+ hour shows and making sure he gives the fans a good show. There aren't many artists that will do that for their fans. He isn't the number one best guitarist, singer, or songwriter, but he is damn good at all of the above. As far as all time greatest bands/artists of all time go, he'd be in the top 50. It's hard for me to put him higher because although he's good, he's hardly influential. He rocked a generation, but it's hard to find a 20 year old Springstein fan. It's easy to find a young Zeppelin, Ozzy, Hendrix, etc. fan. I believe that is his only fault, but he is a great musician.

Out of the "classic" rockers I rank him 1th. Especially if we consider the classic rockers today. He's still putting on good shows. Most of the others suck.

I'm leaving the Beatles out of the rankings because it's not fair to include them. They win everything.

you're right, i put him at number two for greatest songwriters, second to dylan. if you go to a springsteen show you will see that at least 30% of the crowd is under age 30, usually more than that.

I know I'm in the minority on this, but I'm not a huge Beatles fan. I like some of their songs....and nobody can take away what they did for music. But I think a lot of their songs and lyrics are just crappy.

He MUST be a great entertainer.....but I'm not real impressed with his actual singing ability and he only has 2 or 3 songs I don't turn immediately.

I'd rank him about 134th all-time.

Nice a fellow Beatle hater. Hello Sherm, my name is Gerb and I use the White album purely for lines thats why its white.

I like Bruce. But not all his stuff. His voice tends to get on my nerves in some songs which is odd because I really enjoy Dylan.

I definitely wouldn't say he's not top bunch but I wouldn't say he's the best

I've got my finger on the trigger, but I don't know who to trust.
