No. 32-48 in Big Ten play is not something the university should strive for. Of course, neither is 15-29 (Brewster's record) but they can do better with more institutional support.

We'd be blowing leads in the cold instead of indoors.
But seriously, although he's a great X's and O's guy (on offense) he never really cared for recruiting. It showed when he couldn't field a MAC quality defense in almost every single year. For that reason, I don't think he'd be any better than a 6-6 (3-5) coach .. which is what he was for the majority of years he was the Gophers head coach.

Fair enough. I was hoping OSU would hire Mason when they got Tressel. No complaints from me now though. I've always been surprised he didn't get a job somewhere after Minnesota let him go.

LOL, I like watching Mike Leach's offense as much as the next guy but I'm doubting it makes it to the Big Ten any time soon. Watching kids from the upper midwest try to run that would be like watching Wisconsin run the Rich Rod spread. Leach definitely had an advantage being able to recruit kids from his backyard that didn't go to Texas/Oklahoma. No such luxury in Minnesota.

I'll repeat: 32-48 in the Big Ten over 10 seasons. They can and should get a coach that aims for a 4-4 average. Occasionally, 3-5 or 2-6. Occasionally, 5-3 or 6-2. But averaging less than 3 Big Ten wins a season is not a goal.

Didn't Schiano turn down Miami a few years ago? Since then Rutgers hasn't had the same success. He might have missed his chance at moving up, although Minnesota isn't really a dream job anyway. I would just be surprised if he was interested in going there.

Didn't the Gophers hire Mark Mangino as a "consultant". My bet would be he would be the coach next year.
Regarding Schiano, he has hit his ceiling at Rutgers. Back in 2006, he was everyone's short list for the next great thing. He made the mistake of staying in Piscataway and showing his weaknesses. He is a very conservative, un-original play caller and not a very good game day coach. He may not even have his current job at the end of the season if he keeps it up.

Hearing that Leslie Frazier (Vikings DC) is interested. Also would not be surprised if Mike Belotti comes up.
It was said during the presser that Tony Dungy is not returning to coaching but will help in any way possible to find the next coach. Should be an interesting few months, and given the AD's ability to get Tubby, don't be surprised to see the U lay down a lot of money and pull in a big name.

Its that "hot coach" or "hot team" syndrome. They had one good year in a mediocre conference and he's a world changer. Not that Miami is anything great these days, but they would probably have been much worse off had Schiano accepted. For him, he was an idiot not to strike while his professional iron was hot. And that is why I never fault any coach for bolting the minute they get such an opportunity. Why @#$% yourself for the remainder of your career by trying to "build" at a shithole when a school that can actually throw some weight behind you is willing to overpay you?
As for Schiano and Minny....he still has astronomically better odds of a conference title and BCS game at Rutgers than at Minny. Sad to say, but it'd be a step down for him (though a huge amount of money might trump that since its not likely he's not gonna be any better than average either place.
