LOL.

WHO GIVES A FUCK?!?!?!

I know how to change the oil in my car, hell, I changed oil a few years ago as a summer job..

Point is, I don't feel like doing it, so I don't.

I mean seriously, I never knew it was such a bid deal to some that a lot of people don't give a fuck about changing their own oil...

That's such a dumb attitude.

Take an economics course and you'll understand why some people change their own oil and some pay a service center to do it.

I really don't see what can go horribly wrong with an oil change as long as you go to a reputable place (which means either someone you know or know their reputation or a large corporate chain like Pepboys that would have corporate policies in place like "don't let them drive away without having put any oil in").

Sure, he could have done it himself. But he didn't. The point is, he payed for a service, and was very clear on what he wanted done and how he wanted it done and offered to pay for the cost of it to have it done that way...they told him they would do it for him that way, and as soon as they thought he wasn't looking, they tried to put the oil he didn't want and specifically asked NOT be put in his car, in his car and then still charge him for doing what he wanted them to do. So they get extra $, plus, someone there is getting several free quarts or Mobile 1...which is not cheap btw.

Put it too you like this. You go to a restaurant, and you order meal X. When your food comes out, you see that the meal they brought you was not meal X, but meal Z that you did not order, and is half the price of the meal you did order, but you're still going to be charged the price of meal X. On top of that, when you say something about it, the waiter tells you to shut up and deal with it and don't bitch about what someone did that you could have done yourself. Sure you could cook your own food; if everyone did that every single time they eat, there would be no such thing as restaurants. When you pay for a service, you are paying for the CONVENIENCE. People go to restaurants to save time, effort and to have someone bring them the food they want, how they want it. Much the way paying a service center to change your oil is done to save time, effort and have someone do it how they want it done. That's what most of you are misunderstanding about being "certified". As many of you have pointed out, any idiot can change their oil. Taking it to a certified shop is designed to assure the customer paying for the service that the job will be done correctly the first time. Service shops don't get certified because they know how to change oil, or every mom n pop gas station that does oil changes, and even your alcoholic neighbors garage would be certified...certified is level of professionalism that is supposed to reflect their SERVICE, not their KNOWLEDGE.

You depend on it to work don't you? That's a pretty illogical way of thinking.

Synthetic Oil??

It takes a lot for your oil's viscosity to break down. The primary concern is the oil getting dirty. That usually happens long before the viscosity breaks down. If you're changing it as frequently as every three to five thousand miles what advantage do you find in using the synthetic oil?

Never complain about fast food then. you can make it yourself.

Also.. I NEVER said how often Im changing my synthetic oild. You guys are just making stuff up and going with it.

A Prius with normal oil is recommended at 5k intervals, synthetic at 10k.

I obviously like to go 10k with no chnages other than changing the oilf filter every 5k.

that's not even the point.

I understand changing every 10K miles. Is that why you choose synthetic.....so you can go every 10K in between changes?

Unless you are running a high - performance engine, synthetic oil is a huge rip-off. Buy the 2.99 stuff and change it every 3 - 5K and you will be fine.

I'll bet you buy all the extended warranties on electronics too don't you Rysap?

Your food point is very good and directly applies.

On a separate note...I hate fast food and avoid it at all costs. I'd rather go hungry.

I look at do it yourself vs. paying a little differently. The time it would take me to change the oil is worth more than the cost of having it done, so I pay to have it done.

The savings for doing it yourself are fairly small, so it comes down to how much you value your time. For each person, the trade-offs are different--you can hire a cleaning lady, or someone to mow your lawn, or someone to change your oil, or a drycleaner, or whatever else. It just depends on how much money you're willing to trade for time. For each person that is going to be different.

Edit--
Looks like QCB beat me to my point.

Exactly. That's how I feel about people who hire lawyers. I mean, don't cry to me that you got screwed in your divorce/custody battle/whatever when you could've represented yourself.

Huh? Isn't Pick6 saying you should do it yourself?

Sorry, I should've turned on my sarcasm font. I think it makes good sense to hire experts in some situations where the convenience outweighs the savings. That's going to be a different spot for each person.

I cut my own hair, change my own oil, built my own house, make my own clothing, butcher my own meat, grow my own corn/wheat/rice, milk my own cows, make my own soap, etc.

Did you build your own car? Do you drill your own crude oil and refine it? Do you produce your own electricity? Do you run your own water and sewage system?
