Wouldn't that be nice. Choo, Jennings, and fill in a RF. Nice way to make up for losing Carl.

Is there any truth to the rumors that Tampa is wanting to cut payroll, so they are going to blow this thing up? If it is....that is truly sad, they have so much young talent down there.

They have already said that no matter what happens in the playoffs that Rafeal Soriano, Carl Crawford and a 3rd player I cant remember will not be back.

I think it was something like at least 20% of their current payroll. Florida Marlins here they come.

Florida doesn't deserve any sports franchises.

Definitely not baseball. And definitely not 3 NFL teams.

Yeah its terrible, that team is young, talented and very fun to watch. Best record in the majors and they can barely get 15 thousand a game during the regular season. Put that franchise in a sports friendly city or state and they would RAKE in the money

Best record in the AL, but yeah, it's a shame.

I'd move the Rays to Portland and the Marlins to Charlotte. The AL East would now be the 4 team division and the NL East wouldn't have to change.

The Rays will need to replace Soriano (and I think Carlos Pena might be the other guy they are losing) but they probably won't skip much of a beat without Carl Crawford. Jennings is basically Carl Crawford all over again.
Closers are a dime a dozen and then they will only need to replace Pena. Pena didn't hit much for average (.196 haha, I doubt they'd really want to make a long term commitment to that)
The Rays will be fine

Just go back to American League and National League. Best solution IMO

Good closers are tough to get, espically in today's game.
Not saying Soriano was a good closer, but that will be a big concern for them.

You mean back to two divisions in each league? East and West.

Yah Cliff Lee didn't make any sense when it happened. It's truly amazing that a player of his caliber has been traded so many times in the past 2 years.

I think he meant abolishing divisions and jsut having two leagues. Top 4 teams from each league make the playoffs.
It's been discussed a little, and I think it was Tim Kirkjian that said if something like that happened, it'd be a great concept as long as 6 teams from each league made the playoffs.
Said the fan interest would be huge for baseball again, because if your team is the 6th best in the league, but may be behind the 4th place team by 7 or 8 games with 20 to play, you'd still have the hope of the playoffs.

I said on another thread , as an Indians fan, how frustrating it is to watch Lee and Sabathia pitch dominate in the playoffs. If Tampa has to blow this thing up because of finances, it will only serve to emphasize that baseball needs to get its shit together and really fix the system so a small market team can reasonably retain its top players.

I would want a transfer from Cleveland also.
But if he does get traded somewhere down the line, where would his 2 years of service play into his time?

This.
Although I said Florida teams don't deserve sports franchises, this is the main reason why interest for baseball has been dying. For a small market team, it has to be the perfect storm. You need a few veterans to play hot for one season and you need your big time prospects to finally start playing like they were expected to just in time before they are traded, because the small market team won't be able to afford them after their successful season. Once the small market team has a successful season, chances are they will be able to sign one "star" player and will have to repeat the process.

Gotcha. Would that work? It hasn't like that since the 1960's when there were only 8-12 teams in each league.

I think it would be great. The schedules would be evened out. You wouldn't be playing some teams 6 times a season, while playing others 19 times.

Please. Closers are literally a dime a dozen. Chris Perez of the Indians had an outstanding season. Had 23 saves on a bad team (ERA of 1.71) and he makes $400k. They traded Mark Derosa to get him (the Indians got another guy in the trade too).
The point is, you can pick any run of the mill hard throwing pitcher with a decent second pitch and they can be a good closer. There are other variables, sure, but small market teams have been brilliant using this strategy. (buying low, building up the guys value, and then either A) trading him or B) letting him walk )

Uh, it took us a while to get a guy like Chris Perez at closer...
Bob Wickman, Joe Blo, Kerry Wood, etc... All guys we had to deal with before finding Perez.
I get what you mean though, Closers only need to be at least serviceable to be effective as they maybe pitch what, maybe 65-80 innings a year?

The Reds are dropping mega bucks on Coco Cordero. They could be spending much less for the type of pitching he provided us with. I'm saying that you can most definitely get away with having an average closer. The Indians had Joe Borowski during their playoff run a couple of years ago, right? He's working Citgo now.
