I've never contemplated more than I have today/tonight why I choose to have such a passion for sports. I get hammered on here a lot for calling certain players names and saying F' this team or they are bitches ect... But I'm not a "rah rah" type fan where I am proud of just getting there or making things close & patting the other team on that back for a job well done after they beat my team. I root for my team and my team only.

But why do we sit and there for 3 hours or so every baseball game or every Saturday/Sunday glued to the T.V. or in the stands? After days like today where both Cincinnati teams pretty much punched me in the gut, I still can't wait until next Sunday and Spring Training for baseball. So what makes you/us go through all of this? I love the passion of every team I enjoy watching, There is NOTHING like a Saturday in Columbus for me! But with every heartbreak loss I ask myself that same question what do I have such a passion for sports....but I will not change!

Because we have no control over it, but it's a pride/loyalty thing, especially for those of us who actually root for our hometown teams.

I honestly dont know. Having lived through a Super Bowl with the Colts and Stanley Cup with Red Wings...the heartbreaks completely overshadow the championships lol. Its a painful life, but so worth it. The satisfaction and everything that goes along with being a fan make it so much fun. Living with a team day in day out is like nothing else.

it is better to be passionate about even things we cannot control, than to be passive observers.

Losses hurt more....but wins are even harder earned.

Sports are an awful lot like religion...a lot of the passion for it is derived from faith and belief.

I'll go with three main reasons:

1) They're fun to play -- there are all kinds of sports that test different skills and athletic abilities
2) They're entertaining to watch -- think of all the thrilling finishes, great plays and important moments over the years, those defining moments and great experiences are better than just the routine times when you're going to school or working
3) Good way to bond with family and friends -- it might just mean calling everybody up or getting together to watch the game or attend a game

I disagree.

I do enjoy the certainty of the outcome and the entertainment it brings but I keep it in perspective. The joy or disappointment is very short term and it's just another form of entertainment.

If I can't control my fanaticism for it I need to stop watching it all together.

Huh?

I was talking about how we have no control over the outcome of the games.

After this weekend I'm not sure why.

Friday night - Reds lose
local high school football team loses

Saturday - Ohio State won (helped the pain a little)

Sunday - Reds lose
Bengals lose

And I can't wait until spring training. Going into this year I thought we were a year away from truly contending. Hopefully the Reds learned through the lumps they took.
