I am going to college for engineering and wondering some thoughts on which one to enroll in. I think it is pretty much between OU and OSU. I could get my general courses out of the way at OUZ then got to Athens for a few years. If not I could go to OSU Newark then to Columbus to finish. Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

That is one main reason I'm going other than to better things for myself and son. My brother graduated with 3.99 this summer and set the bar high for me and Dan. I'm just curious as to which people think is a better choice between the two. I just hope it might motivate him to go, because dan made the bet to see who would get a degree first.

I want in on that bet! I need to go back and get my bachelors, associates don't do shit anymore.
Go wherever you feel comfortable with. Check out the campuses, profs etc... and go from there. As my dad said they never asked where or how you got they just want to to know if you got it.

If it is between those two schools, OSU is the way to go. There are just a lot more employment opportunities in Columbus after school than in Athens. While you are at OSU, you can co-op at a company which will get your foot in the door.

If you haven't looked into it, you should consider the University of Cincinnati for the same reasons. They have a real solid engineering program and their co-op program is top notch.

I want to do Mechanical Auto, Really want to work for Ford someday! If I went to Athens I could get the Industrial Engineering degree which includes Mechanical, Civil, and Electrical. This way I would be covered on all aspects, could basically have a degree to build anything, from cars to roads and bridges and buildings.

I haven't really looked into OSU much to know how their programs are.

If you really want to work for ford go to OSU get and get a masters in ME. You will have to have a very high GPA. Also I don't think the IE degree at OU quite works that way.

Ok thanks for the input I will call OSU to get some info from them. I wasn't sure about the IE but that's what a friend who went to Athens said so I'm not sure just took his word for it. The GPA thing won't be a problem if I keep myself motivated, I'm very very smart when applying myself and have a high IQ if that means anything lol

You are more than welcome to join the bet it might help motivate dan a little more than I can myself. I'm just the dumb older brother that don't know shit, you know? Maybe from a friend he might comprehend what you're saying. Dan has a mind that is probably more genius than anyone on this forum (no disrespect to anyone) but he is brilliantly smart and is just letting it waste away like me. I haven't really known what I wanted to go to College for (until now) but he does! The boy loves his weather and needs to become a Meteorologist!

If you go to OSU there are also student groups for engineering like the buckeye bullet, forumula buckeyes the baja team ect, these teams provide good experience and good networking with sponser companies (ie: ford).

I go to OU, and if you are 100% set on engineering then go to OSU. They have a very good engineering program, although it is very tough. Not saying our engineering program isn't good, but OSU's is better.

Also, going to OU-Z may set you back a year atleast on graduating with an engineering degree. Have a friend down here who went to OU-C and couldn't take certain classes, the Calc/Physics/Chem sequences are only offered once through the whole year, so if you don't take Math 263A fall quarter than you won't be able to take B and C the following quarters.

Anything other than engineering? Come to OU :)

Ranking of Ohio public colleges engineering programs...

1. OSU
2. Akron U

3. Rest

If I lived in Ohio and wanted to be an engineer (oh wait, I am), it would be between those two.

If you wanted to do chemical or polymer engineering I would go to Akron.

If you want to do anything else I'd probably go to OSU, but do consider looking into Akron's design team/program they do in the MechE department every year where for a design class the students design/build a baja car for engineering colleges competitions. I only bring this up because it would be GREAT on a resume if you want to work in the auto industry.

Solid advise. UC has a great co-op program and excellent engineering program. Go to the campus where you are most comfortable.

Why would you limit yourself to public schools when the best in the state by a fair margin is a private school?

I wonder if going to OSU-N would set me back? I want to try and keep as many classes close to home as possible. I have an 8 year old son that is my main priority or I would just move. I want to get the non-degree classes out of they way before I made the longer commute to Cbus.

That would be awesome since I've been a Bengals and Reds fan my whole life. The thing that holds me back is the split custody I have of my son. Which in turn makes it hard for me to commute anywhere farther than a hour away.

Thats hard to say, because I doubt they offer the Calc 150 series physics 130 series and chem 120 series that are pre reqs for engineering.

I am in my third year as a civil engineering major at osu, and yes they make it pretty difficult. However, you can take all of these series at columbus state, and im guessing at OSU nerk as well. I have taken phys 132 at c state, and plan on taking chem 122 and math 255 there as well its a joke how much easier it is there and all of the credit transferrs to OSU.

If you're seriously considering other schools besides OSU, then don't come here, we don't want you diluting the value of our degree. While OSU will get you the best education, the best opportunities, the best(read: most fun) social environment, we don't really look to kindly upon people that can't get in here.

And Akron? Ya, go to Akron, they are entirely on OSU's level
