I don't listen to the radio...You won't find the Black Seeds, A tribe called quest no the radio. Country is not for me, nor do I find it in the least bit "good music." Turn off that gay twang and listen to The Black Seeds and see if you like them

I just wanna preface that I don't have any one particular favorites, more like a bunch of favorites. So, I'm just gonna pick one of my favorites for each category. It's impossible for any one to be that good over another, simply because each one adds some thing that the other does not.

Country: Johnny Cash (if I had to choose a second, it would be Kris Kristofferson - dude has mad writing skills)
Classic Rock: Tom Petty
Modern Rock (any type): my dude has got me really paying attention to Stone Sour
Hip Hop/R&B: ...
Pop: Third Eye Blind
Oldies Pop (general): Jerry Lee Lewis

*Classical: Verdi (Albinoni would be in top 5)

I listen to all genres of music, and quite a wide variety at that. I have about a dozen Black Seeds songs on my itunes at the moment, I was turned on to them in college several years ago, by an international student FROM New Zealand no less. I can't say they're one of my favorite artists, but they are insanely talented and I definately enjoy several of their songs...I just have to be in the mood to listen to their music when I do.
There's a certain type of understanding you have to have to appreciate country music (good country music) and some people don't have it; that's fine. To each their own. Same way I find anything Larry David is associated with as a waste of time. But there's not really much gay about it. If you grew up out here and lived the way people that love country music do, you'd have a whole new perspective on it, trust me. That's how I know that 95% of country today is pop; when people who have never left a city in their life, or 13 year old suburban girls are listening to "country", it's not country, and how I can almost guarantee you that what you've head that you hate, is not country. I'd recommend Jamey Johnson for starters.

Great, great shit.

Also, when the hell did the Eagles become country? I'm gonna stick with their 40+ hits on the rock charts since over the last 40 years to keep them in classic rock...I can see people picking Johnny Cash he was on several of the "Tennessee Hayride" tours and had over half of his hits on country/western radio, not to mention married into the Carter family...but the Eagles? I disagree.

fair enough, and I'm surprised someone else on here knows about them, didn't think this site would have fans of that genre. The Black Seeds are definitely one of those bands that sounds A LOT better after smoking some ganja. As far as country is concerned, I only ever hear the bullshit that is mainstreamed so it's what I base it on. I'll check out Jamey and see what I think.

There are a lot of Johnny Cash fans here. Don't get me wrong, I like him but I would not call him my favorite and I didn't realize he was that popular.

I also agree that most country today is pop.

The Eagles themselves have said they added Country to their style to become big. The are mostly rock (classic), but they have Country, Blues, Folk, Bluegrass. It wasnt really till Schmidt and Walsh joined that they became more rock only oriented. That was around their 3rd Album, after Eagles and Deperado.

This is the way to go about finding music in any genre. For the most part, and there are exceptions, if it plays on the radio it is probably really bad.

It’s country enough for me. Non-Joe Walsh they are pretty twangy. Not really a fan of country. I like the Eagles, Skynard, The Outlaws. Is that Southern Country Rock?

Skynyrd and the Outlaws are just southern rock, but not the Eagles.
