Side note, anyone else notice in the replay when the umpire threw Maddon out it gave a speed reading? 89 MPH, that's a pretty good toss. And no that wasn't still up from before, the pitch came in at 91 MPH.

As for Jeter trying to get on base, sure if the ump messes up take advantage but there's no need to milk it you got your base go run.

Great move by Jeter, get on anyway you can when your down 1 run. Im guessing alot of you have never played baseball. Because I know I have took a slow curve ball off the elbow, or have faked getting hit by a pitch.

Websters defines cheating as: to influence or lead by deceit, trick, or artifice
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/cheating

Did he influence the decision? Well, from what I heard on ESPN this morning, at first the ump gave him his base then they all got together to discuss it, MEANWHILE Jeter is gimping around in pain, being checked over by the trainer.
Did he lead by deceit/trick? Well, he was never actually hit, but he sure acted like he was.

...Sounds to me like it was cheating. Was it a shitty, mild example of cheating? Sure, probably.

Me either.... although I think he was a pussy by wreathing in pain and letting the trainer check his arm. I also would have no problem with the Rays giving him a 94 mph pitch to the ribs. If you are going to get a free base on my team you will have to earn it.

This is what, I think, everyone has the problem with. I don't care that he took his base, but don't act like your hand got caught in a lawnmower blade.

No way in hell do I look at the ump and say "it didn't hit me." That's like looking at an ump who just called a ball, that was clearly a strike, and saying no that was a ball, do not call it a strike.

That would be pretty stupid to do considering how tight the pennant race is, and you don't want anyone getting suspended and missing any amount of time.

Look, I've seen it happen before. He did his job and got on base, on a close call happening at the speed which it occured for an umpire. Like he said, its his JOB. what's he gonna do, not take his base?

Agreed 100%, Umps miss calls often, no reason for a player to correct them. But there is a big difference between a person trying to take a charge in basketball and a soccer player acting is if they are going to die on the field. Jeter, unfortunately, came closer to the latter.

Yep 4 times was a couple to many. Another thing don't call me a jarhead, alot of us don't take a liking to that. On another note get over your fucking self.

No different than an outfield trapping the ball and raising his glove as if he caught the ball or a phantom tag by an infielder selling to the ump that he tagged the runner.

+1. If people are going to hate Jeter for this, they have to hate guys who act like they made a diving catch when the ball hits the ground. Or guys in football who hold their arms up innocently after holding a guy by his jersey when he was trying to get to the quarterback. Or defenders who tackle a receiver three seconds before the ball gets there, then stand up and wave their hands that the pass was incomplete. This is stupid, its part of sports.

I agree with quite a few on here. I get that its his job to get on base, and that he shouldnt say "the ball didnt hit me". But he didnt have to grab his wrist in agony and call the trainer over, take your base and be on your way

People fake fouling it off themselves when they hit a weak dwibbler. It's part of the game.

One difference that many people take seriously - never sportsmanlike to act injured when you aren't. It is what separates sports from soccer.

Soooo....Posada did the same thing last night. Minus the flailing around and acting like he got bit by a shark.
