FREMONT — Fremont St. Joseph won the battle of defending Midland Athletic League champs as the Crimson Streaks pinned a 23-6 loss on Carey in a rare Friday night MAL game at Don Paul Stadium.
With the win, St. Joseph improved to 4-0 overall and is 1-0 in the league. Carey dropped its third straight contest and is 1-3 and 0-1.
Garrett Walker scored on a 14-yard run and Matt Mehalko added a 1-yard quarterback sneak to give the Crimson Streaks a 14-0 first-quarter lead.
Carey quarterback Bryce Orians cut the deficit to 14-6 with a 6-yard touchdown run.
But Brant Reardon hauled in a 6-yard touchdown pass from Mehalko to make it 21-6 at halftime.
The Crimson Streaks tacked on a safety in the fourth quarter.
Zac Bowman led Fremont St. Joseph with 69 yards rushing on 18 carries. Mehalko was 10 of 17 passing for 150 yards.
Bryce Orians was Carey’s top ground gainer with 14 carries for 41 yards.
