disappointing 0-2 start for Virginia Tech, but Beamer isn't going anywhere

but here are some coaches who should be in trouble:

Dan Hawkins, Colorado...Just not happening in Boulder. Hawkins went 53-11 at Boise State but only 17-34 in Colorado. Buffs got crushed 52-7 at Cal on Saturday.

Paul Wulff, Washington State...They snuck by Montana State 23-22 Saturday, but this program is a joke right now. Wulff just 4-23 in three seasons.

Rick Neuheisel, UCLA...Got off to an exciting start in that game against Tennessee but since then it's been pretty lackluster. 4-8 record in year one, 7-6 in year two and right now 0-2 and a very ugly showing against Stanford.

Mike Price, UTEP...I think this will be his last year there, one way or another. Maybe he should go back to Washington State.

Tim Brewster, Minnesota...Any momentum they may have had with the new stadium seems to be gone now.

Ron Zook, Illinois...Finished eighth and ninth in the conference the past two years after that Rose Bowl trip. Another year like that and I think he's gone.

Mike Sherman (Texas A&M)- Everyone knows he is just occupying what is going to be Kevin Sumlin's job in the near future. If Sumlin gets serious offers from elsewhere, Sherman is good as gone.


Bill Stewart (WVU)- If Marshall would not have played prevent defense the past two minutes, Mountaineer fans would have strung him up on a tree on Friday night. If he loses 3 games or more this season and not win the Big East the administration there will be under serious pressure to make a change. (Sounds like Frank Solich at Nebraska).

Let's not kid ourselves here, Rich Rodriguez is still on the hot seats. Two wins, even two good wins, does not save your job. Michigan started out 4-0 last year and then fell apart in conference play. I think they still need to finish at least 4-4 in conference play to guarantee he keep his job. If they finish with only 2 or 3 conference wins it's likely that he's still on his way out.

RichRod has yet to prove he knows how to handle Big 10 Conference play...

This start is eerily similar for Michigan last year.

IIRC, the reason Zook still has his job is purely financial. If the Illini had fired him last year he would be stilled owed millions under his contract. There would be no buyout if he is terminated at the end of this season.

Zook's next gig will likely be on the BTN or something like that.

He's one good hit on Robinson away from being in the same position as last season.

Hawkins is the worst offender on the list. It's a shame what has happened in Boulder.

The Buffs have not been good since the mid 90s. The difference? From about the mid 80s through the mid 90s Colorado was brining in guys from California, Louisiana and Texas who would never be accepted at Colorado today. Back in the late 80's they were stacked with talent. Both football and basketball coaches at CU have been complaining for a while that they can't get the athletes they need to compete at a high level.

I think Hawkins will get the axe, but it is all not necessarily his fault.

Hawkins is probably finished as well if they don't win 7+ games

Exactly. If Robinson get's hurt, and at his size it's almost a certainty that he will if he keeps running the ball as much as he has thus far, RichRod is left with a true freshman of a true sophomore who seems to have checked out. Now, if these three guys really were as even in preseason as we were led to believe, then it may not be a huge issue. However, I have to imagine that it was going to be Robinson all along because I doubt that he's been so exponentially better in these first two games than he was all preseason.

Wow, you really fell for that. This is ccrunner you're talking about. The guy is a moron who wasn't being serious and was only trying to get a rise out of people like you. Obviously it work. And don't forget that everyone said that Weis was 10000000x the coach that Willingham was, and that turned out to not be the case.

Unfortunately they may not be able to afford to fire him yet. Colorado only agreed to play OSU next year because of the $1.3 million they are getting for the game, and they aren't moving to the Pac-10 next year because they can't afford to give up the money they have to forfeit for leaving. That athletic department is broke right now, so unless they can get rid of him without having to pay him, it's possible he'll still be on the sidelines when the Buff's come to Columbus next fall.

Brewster is gone at the end of the season. Thankfully the university restructured his contract last year so he won't be paid that much when he gets canned. Disappointing, because I thought he could do some very good things at the U. But, this weekend showed me that he's got to go. Also, Kevin Cosgrove sucks.

I'll add Mark Richt to the list as well. The Georgia folks won't be too happy when he drops 4 games this year.

Are they broke from the financial settlements from lawsuits they had to pay out?

I think Mike Leach will resurface somewhere but I don't think it will be at a major school like UCLA or Colorado.

He seems like a better fit at an odd place. New Mexico or UTEP or some place like that.

Phillip Fulmer might get back in and I was thinking maybe Vanderbilt. They lost their coach right before the season and might be looking for more of a long term guy after the season.

I remember saying Bill Stewart was on the hot seat back in August and I believe you said it would take a sub .500 record for him to get fired. I see you have changed your tune.

I have, but not completely. I think WVU has high expectations this year, but Stewart could overcome a 9-3 type season with losses to LSU, Pitt and possibly UCONN. However, if Stewart loses anything more than that, especially to schools he has struggled with like USF and UC he is done. They have a new AD and I think they are regretting the decision not to give the job to Doc Holliday. My understanding is Stewart has one more year on his contract so unless he wins the Big East in either season, I would not be surprised to see a new coach in Morgantown after his contract expires.

On some other coaches:
I would be surprised to see Fulmer at Vanderbilt. One, he costs too much. Two, I doubt both parties would be agreeable to the type of athlete that can be recruited. I see Fulmer picking up a job that may open up in C-USA.

Mike Leach is going to land somewhere bigger than the MWC, WAC or Sunbelt. He is an odd duck and certainly there is the whole closet incident, but I think that will be overlooked and forgotten for his coaching ability and high schoring offense. I would not be surprised to see him land in a job left vacant in the ACC, Big East or possibly the Pac10.
