So I went to the doctors today for a physical before I have to go to Romania and my blood pressure is sky high. Now it runs in my family, but I work out 5 days a week and I'm not outta shape like my dad and uncles are and my grandpa was. But regardless its way high. So he tells me he's gonna have me come back in 3 weeks before I leave and if it's still high I have to go on medicine. I'm only 28, I don't want to be on medicine for high blood pressure already. I already work out... I guess I can cut back on salts and pop. What else can I do? He's making it sound like its hereditary and there's not shit I can do about it.

What can you do about it? Get a new doctor if he can't answer your questions.

That's the biggest issue I have with it. I saw some young guy b/c my doctor was off this week and all he really would say is "well its just hereditary in ur case."

walk outside grab a rope. throw it over a limb that is about 15 feet off the ground. pull your car up to the rope making sure the hood of the car is far enough away from the tree to not interupt the carnage that follows. now stand on the hood tie the rope around your neck as tight as you can now jump off the hood if you done all of this right you should never have another problem with high blood pressure.
If thats not your answer then just cut back on salt processed foods etc.

I'm in the same situation man. 21 with blood pressure that is usually in the 140's. I mean I should definitely know every way there is to lower it too and still it wont come down.
Hearing 'its hereditary' might piss you off, but there is a lot of truth to it.

It depends on what type of working out you do Z4P.
If you do a lot of weight training, while good for your physique and your weight, not great for heart/high blood pressure issues. The "thicker" you are muscle wise the more your heart has to work to push blood around.
However, if you are "skinny" and do mostly aerobic exercise, then ignore my post and I hope it works out for you.
Oh yeah, and while Romania sucks, it can't be worse than India...worst 2 weeks of my life

Here is how?
1. Both feet flat on the ground (no crossing legs or cross ankles) feet flat on ground
2. Sit up straight ..shoulder back but not tight or rigid .....relax
3. Both hands straight out elbow a little bent and finger straight out also on your leg
4. Take a few deep breaths and relax
5. Keep you head straight forward and relaxed and think of nice comfortable thoughts (try to avoid a hard on Zwick) this is not a sperm count...
6. Close your eyes and relax like you’re going to sleep..
if it is high ask to take it again ...in 3 minutes …the second time it will be 10 points lower... relax in you mind
I do this all the time ..Once a bet the nurse I could lower my blood pressure 15 points it was high like 180 …. Dropped it to 160
Zwick: Oat meal does help but avoid the sugar and to much milk, walking is another positive thing to do and also sex …. I go that from the doctor ( my wife was there and it was confirmed )
First time I ever paid for a doctors appointment and got my long term money worth out of it…

1. Don't post on here anymore.
2. But if you do, avoid confrontations.
3. Ignore advice given on an Internet message board. (except for Belly35, of course!)
Best of luck to ya.

I've been hypertensive for a couple years now (currently 23 years old)....I actually have a heart defect that causes it, but it does run in my family.
Ways you can lower it? Exercise, for one. And not weightlifting but cardio. You also have to watch your diet - cut back on salt and caffeine. Another factor can be stress. If you're one of those type-A personalities who's always anxious and on the go, then your BP could be high.
Don't fight medicine, if that's the route your doc encourages you to go. I'm currently on Norvasc and there's hardly any side-effects, but it works great. Plus it's really not one of those things you should ignore, because it can cause plenty of medical problems down the road.
Also, don't be afraid to ask for a cardiology consult. They can tell you A LOT more information than your average family doctor can.

Did he take your blood pressure at the end of the appt as well? If so was it still as high or had it come down some?

So here's what I'm gathering. I need to chill on the weight lifting and focus more on cardio. Cut out pop and other caffeine. Cut back on salts and eat a little healthier?
I can handle that.

the top number being higher typically has an anxiety component, but you said you workout a lot, so your next step for anxiety would probably be an SSRI, while the social stigma is gone, the side effects aren't really worth it if you can fix it well enough with diet. Many people just think of the sexual side effects with SSRIs, but they also have lots of other physical side effects like fatigue, weakness, shakyness, diarrhea, bloating, gas and other annoying side effects like insomnia. Anyways, anxiety and high blood pressure run in my family and cutting out caffeine and excercising more (cardio) have helped the most

I have a genetic disease with my kidneys and have been on blood pressure medication for about a year now. Was always pretty high, but went to the doctor one time because my eye swelled and I was 180/80, so he said I needed to see my doctor. The medication makes me a little light headed at times, but I'm consistently around 130/80 now.
Had two relatives need kidney transplants in the last couple years, so I actually started taking it serious. Although I didn't change my diet because the doc said it wasnt' needed.

Sometimes a little salt goes along way. You can easily rack up 2,000-3,000mg by eating restaurant food (fast or slow, breakfast, lunch or supper). People think salty like chips, which one serving might have 200-300mgs. Compare to 1,300 for a TV dinner or 2,500 for a normal restaurant meal. Soups are crazy high in salt. Also, magnesium, a salt, and potassium, another salt, actually can have a negative effect on your BP. Those would be food types to help your BP.
Once you eat low salt items and get used to them, them regular salted items may taste a little salty. So if you can get used to no salt Snyder's Chips, or low salt Lay's, you won't miss it. If you watch for real and do walking and still have HBP, it may be a good investment to treat it before your heart starts to "muscle up", or enlarge, due to having to pump against the higher resistance. Good luck, I have also been fighting this, however, mine is never high in the office, but can be sometimes at home.

I most likely have high blood pressure as well. It runs in the family plus the fact that I'm not in great shape. I don't really care all that much, though.
