Couldn't agree more.

The problem isn't the tradition of the uniform, it's the university trying to pass these uniforms off as "throwbacks." Last year's uni at Michigan was supposed to be a throwback to the 1950's, but if you look at the picture above of the 1954 uniform (the one they specifically said they were throwing back to) what they wore last year hardly looked like that. No vertical stripes on the shoulders, smaller numbers on the jersey, and numbers on the helmet. Call them what they are, alternate uniforms, and don't try and pass them off as throwbacks.

I agree.

But it wasn't Nike's vision to have them be throwbacks. They only set out to have them be "inspired by" the '54 team. It was the university who came out and said they were to "honor" the '54 team.

Or I should say...Nike never came out and said it was a throwback.

This year's version will once again be worn for the Michigan game.

Ohio State is one of 10 of the top college football programs that will wear uniquely designed Nike uniforms for at least one game during the 2010 season the company announced today. Ohio State will wear the innovative design for the Michigan game November 27

Uggh. If you are going to wear those awful uniforms wear them against OU or something. Don't wear them in a game that will be replayed who knows how many times over the next 20 years. In 2026 some kid is going to ask his dad what the F Ohio State and Nike were thinking.

I think people will lump these abominations in with these: MLB uniforms of the "future"

You're naive if you don't think people base their opinions by branding.

Like I said, slap a generic tag on those unis and people would be complaining to the extent that Ohio State would pull them before they actually wore them

Wrong. If Adidas or Underarmour made OSU's uni's then people would have the same opinion of them. There's no one out there who is an OSU fan or who only buy's OSU gear because it's made by Nike. Trust me, people buy OSU stuff weather it's got the Nike swoosh on it or whether it has been licensed to some other brand. Sure people may be willing to pay more for the Nike jersey but that's only because it's the authentic jersey and not a replica, but those people would do the same thing if it were some other company that made OSU's official jersey's. If you think people will like these or buy these just because they're made by Nike then you're clueless. I bet there are more people that will hate these simply because they are from Nike than those who love them simply because they are from Nike.

Woody Hayes is rolling over in his grave/urn at the sight of these uniforms. They look nothing like the modern Ohio State uniforms we know and love. Uniforms that Ohio State has built that tradition on. And please do not say "well Ohio State changed their uniforms 4 or 5 years ago!" The uniforms they currently wear are almost carbon copies of what they wore while Cris Carter was there.

These (the new) uniforms are a complete cash grab. It isn't based on tradition at all. Ohio State has a lucrative contract with Nike and Nike has them by the nuts. Like I said, I hate the uniforms, but if they are going to wear them, wear them against Ohio University. Ohio State-Michigan is full of years of tradition and Nike has Ohio State stroll onto the field in a uniform that people will be making fun of 5 years from now all so they can generate some extra sales.

Woody Coached in the 50s,60s, and 70s...those helmets look exactly like they do now(sarcasm)...If he is rolling in his grave he is a hypocrite.

I don't know why everyone is getting their panties in a bunch over a uniform they are going to wear ONE time.

Oh by the way, the Michigan game isn't going to be the last game of the year ALL the time anymore. Get over it.

bases loaded, you shouldn't have posted that picture haha. That picture alone shows that the helmets have essentially been the same since 1970. That's 40 years.

Look, I realize there have been tweaks to the uniform. But they haven't been as drastic as this and their (the uniforms) purpose were far more noble (i.e. they weren't trying to cash in on one of the most watched rivalries in sports) than this.

You said Woody would be rolling in his grave...I showed you that he had 6 helmet changes with 4 of them being major ones in his coaching career alone..

There was no tradition to mess with. Woody found a uniform that worked, they built tradition by winning championships, and he kept that style for the rest of his career at Ohio State (1968-'78, 10 years)
