The difference is dedication and parental participation. At my son's school 70% of the kids do not participate in anything. At Newark Catholic which is a local school that is probibly less than 10%. I know the parents because they went to school there with me. I chose not to put my son there. The public schools have to take everyone and try to keep them for their state graduation stats. Sports are not on the radar for someone who doesn't even want to be at school.

It has nothing to do with private or public kids, its about how much the kids/coaches/parents and fans dedicate themselves to the game, how much work the put in and how hard they play. For all you Massillon people, Chris Speilman will tell you he was not the most talanted, but he gave is heart to the game, worked hard, and played through injury. As far as teams "recruiting" players, everyone does it in high school, look up the nations top 100 high school fball teams, most are public schools, for instance, hoover Al, most of those kids arent from Alabama, and at Cal's mater da which is private, most of those from all over Cal. Publics can beat privates, and vise verse. all about heart and will.

I am not in favor of splitting private and public schools.....
Regardless of the advantages in attendance area, ability to recruit and being able to deny admission to students that they do not want (AND allow entrance to students that they DO want)....top public schools are equal to, and in many cases better than, many private schools in both academics and athletics.
Keep 'em together.

There are currently seven (7), private schools playing DI, so out of the approximately 120 total schools in DI, that means there are one hundred and thirteen (113) public schools in DI.
Public schools represent 94%, privates, 6%.
Yet, of the 38 DI State Championship games, the privates have won 23 of them, 60%.
When 6% of the total wins 60% of the prizes, there should be changes made.
Now I know numbers don't always show the real picture, and to prove that, of the 23 Championships that the privates have won, Moeller and Ignatius have won 17 of them.
In the 70s, there were approx. 250 schools competing at the AAA level every year for a State Championship, (compared to the approx. 120 today), yet Moeller seemed to dominate. I'm sure that had something to do with the fact that they were getting kids from several different states.
Privates and publics have faced off 20 times in the championship game, with privates winning 15 times, (75%), of the five (5) losses, three of them have been to Canton Mckinley.
With all that said, I don't think they should seperate them either.
I think a bigger problem is the numbers, as I've said before, their is no ceiling in DI, therefore, if a school with, say, 1171 boys, were to play a school with, oh, I don't know, 550 boys, that's a diff. of approx. 600 boys. The ceiling in DII is 168, DIII 96, DIV 74 and DV 51.
Schools with low #'s in DI, that can compete year in and year out are Massillon and Glenville and occasionally Lima, the next teir up are Upper Arlington, McKinley, Warren and Dublin, after these 7, the large enrollment schools rule the day.
Just drop to D2 and be done with it already.

This is how I feel. This is heavily debated over on the "other" site right now (which is how this thread got started on here, btw) and I'm sure a few people like gamateur, for example will be surprised to hear me say that after the stance I took over there. I'm in favor of a multiplier, which apparently is the end of the world for small private schools. I am in agreement with keeping them together, as my previous post states...however, you make a point in this post that I hope you can address. You say "top public schools" are equal to or greater than many private schools...and I agree. However, what are the other 95% of public open enrollment schools supposed to do, that are not equal to many private schools on a yearly basis because of the reasons you listed above? Are we supposed to just suck it up and be ok with having a great year, making the playoffs and then promptly getting beat by a school that pulled all of the best athletes from their county/area on to 1 team so they could beat teams like ours? Obviously, that does not happen at every private school, and I think locally, Newark Catholic is NOT a terrible school in terms of recruitment, BUT we've all seen schools, pretty much year in and year out where this happens.
