1. This isnt football, so it shouldnt matter week to week.
2. Syracuse dominated UNC, so UNC isnt really the #4 team.
3. Cal is missing a lot, and frankly didnt look good at all. They arent even a top 25 team.
4. Team that jumped them, while they didnt play tough teams, did not lose.
5. OSU is a top 20 team, which is where they are. 3 spots here or there arent a big deal. Personally I think they are closer to 15 where they were than 20 (18 like they are now), but it doesnt matter.

The polls in basketball mean absolutely nothing until conference play starts. Carolina was ranked 4th starting the season after losing something like 80% of their scoring from last year's National Championship team. Kentucky is 5th based solely on potential and a new coach. They are NOT the 5th best team in the country. Once these, all really, teams get used to playing and back into the swing of things we will see who is where. Syracuse jumped all the way thumping my Heels and Cal. And as Laley said, the Bucks are definitely a top 20 team. By the end of the year, I'll go out on a limb and say they're a top 10 team.

I agree with all your guys points. I just didn't think going down 3 spots was really right.

If a Mid-Major (Butler, for example) lost to a Top 10 team early in the year., they would drop more than 3 spots. Trust me.

A loss in college basketball is always gonna move you down in the rankings from the previous week. I don't care who you beat. It's fair.

Doesn't really matter 3-4 games in.

Basketball polls are kind of a joke. You can be #1 one week, lose 2 games to top 10 teams and be ranked #19.

As others have said, the polls are kind of weird and inconsistent at times.

But really, the polls in CBB are completely meaningless. They have no effect on who makes the tournament. In addition, CBB has the most meaningless regular season of any sport. In all but a few conferences, you could literally lose every regular season game and still be national champion.

I've never seen a winless team become the National Champion, but then again I've only been alive for 20 or so years. That's impressive.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure there would have been a reason a team lost all the regular season games in the first place, so I doubt that'd ever happen.

And actually, when is the last time a top 25 team has missed the tournament? I'd say the rankings are pretty relevant, especially when it comes to human opinion on seedings.

I also don't see how the regular season is meaningless. If you don't have a good regular season, you get a terrible seed in your conference tourny, face early elimination and put what little fate you have of making the NCAA tourny in the hands of people who probably don't think you deserve a spot regardless...

The regular season matters overall because you have to be an upper-echelon team to make the NCAA Tournament. However, when comparing regular season resumes for the very top teams, it's not as big of a deal except for seeding purposes.

However, to say the regular season doesn't matter for the teams on the bubble is totally untrue.

Are you people(sleeper and LTrain) really that dense to not understand what I meant, or just trying to be argumentative?

Of course no team that loses every regular season game is going to win the tournament, did you actually think I was suggesting that would happen?

The point is, it's possible, no matter how unlikely. Which says a lot about the value of the CBB regular season. No matter how badly you do in the regular season, you always have a chance to win your conf. tournament. And for a non-bubble team that loses a few games they shouldn't, the only penalty is a slightly lower seed. You're still going to have to beat the best teams to win the thing anyway, so who really cares unless you're concerned about sweet 16 appearances and other achievements less than a national title.

And the fact that a top 25 team has never missed the tourn.(if that's correct) has nothing to do with the credibility of the polls. Just that if a team is at the very least arguably one of the 25 best teams in the country, of course they'll be included in a tourn. of 64

The only teams that the regular season really matters for are bubble teams just trying to make the tournament. For bad teams, it doesn't matter because they'll have to win their conf. tourn regardless, and for the top teams it only matters slight seeding differences. So the only teams it REALLY matters for(bubble teams) are the ones that have no shot at a national title anyway.
