Here is an 80's - 90's band that kicked ass. Stranger rocked many a Spring Breaker in their day. They were/are really good friends of mine. They had a handful of cd's. They were a fun band and had fun when they entertained a crowd. They could party like no other guys I knew. The bass player and singer still play, The Greg Billings Band out of Tampa.

Yes because they sang about real thing's in life instead of objectifying women and sleezy cheesy song's about having a good time. Pantera's glam day's are a disgrace to metal but they redeemed themselves by producing something worthwhile.

I honestly think, and I could write a very long, fact based piece that I'll spare all of you, that hair metal would have died whether grunge came along or not. The hair metal fanatics just needed someone to pin that one on, and it just so happened that grunge was there.
Hair Metal as it was, wouldn't have lasted much past 1993 or so. The musicianship wasn't there, the songwriting wasn't there....that's really what the 90's seemed to pull back towards.

Yeah, I agree Upper. Hair metal would have flamed out one way or another. Mostly just because people would get tired of it and expand their musical horizons eventually. Sex, drugs, and rock and roll only get you so far...eventually, you have to start writing music based on reality.

I agree with that. Hair metal was essentially sex, drugs and rock with a particular sound... And when you limit yourself that much, you're not going to have a huge shelf life. I'd say my favorite of that genre might have been Ratt. They essentially released the same album over and over with as little deviation as possible. Even a fan of that sound will get tired of it eventually and want some versatility. And these groups weren't equipped with the ability to proficiently change their angle. When the grunge era started, a number of them went for a more serious angle. "hair metal" was pop music, MTV and bullshit, no substance, and that's why many shallow people loved it (I did too, but I was in 3rd grd. and dropped it for Nirvana's Nevermind and the Low End Theory in 5th grd.)

i can live with that but the only way nirvana had any substance was through a needle. cobain mumbled most of the time. his wife's band was better

the hair/glam metal era was great. this was back when mtv was actually worth watching. the songs were fun and we all knew it. it was a chance to put on some headphones and lose yourself in the music. some were one hit wonders but thats better than a never was. the serious bs of the 90's and still today sickens me. nickelback reminds me of these hair metal bands. nothing better than a power ballad to set the mood!

You all say that Hair Metal was shit but none of you can explain why Grunge died and none of those bands are still out there performing and releasing new material. Def Leppard has had new material over the last few years, RATT is set to drop an album in 2010

I didn't read much in here...so, if someone pointed this out, I apologize, but Guns and Roses is NOT hair metal as it's been strictly defined. For those of you that would point to the "welcome to the jungle" video as proof of their hair metal credence, I'd point out that it's been well established that they were taking the piss out of hair metal when they made that video. GnR is simply a rock band that put out the greatest rock album ever in "appetite for destruction". Pure rock that is.

They also put out another classic album in Use Your Illusion I and II. First album I believe to ever debut at #1 and #2. I would also agree that GNR is not hair metal

All arguments would be fine if there was a "one true definition" of rock/metal. But there is not. Definitions are subjective.
