Sure I will define it with a few quotes, as you say it can mean different things to different people. Here are people you will recognize I happen to agree with.
The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries.
Winston Churchill
Socialism is the same as Communism, only better English.
George Bernard Shaw
The goal of socialism is communism.
Vladimir Lenin
Democracy is the road to socialism.
Karl Marx
(but remember we are a republic, not a democracy as the progressive would have you believe)

quotes from this page.
here if it makes you happier
Socialism
A theory or system of social reform which contemplates a complete reconstruction of society, with a more just and equitable distribution of property and labor. In popular usage, the term is often employed to indicate any lawless, revolutionary social scheme. See Communism, Fourierism, Saint-Simonianism, forms of socialism.

We are a democratic republic. That is not a true democracy but a form of democracy none the less.RoyalNut wrote: Sure I will define it with a few quotes, as you say it can mean different things to different people. Here are people you will recognize I happen to agree with.

By that definition we are socialist now. Since our declaration of Independence and the writings of our Constitution have we not contemplated complete reconstruction?
Is not welfare redistrubition of property and wealth? They build government houses. The government owns property?
How about the socialist program of fire fighters?
Should that have private ownership and you will receive a bill after their work is done?
Does government worker=socialist?
I find the definition to be a bit lacking so I hope you answer these questions just so terms can be understood.

From the dictionary on my desk:
The new American Webster (handy college) Dictionary *First Printing 1995
socialism - n. ownership of exploitable capital and means of production by the government, not by individuals or private enterprise. -socialist, n. -socialistic, adj.
socialize - v.t. make social or socialistic. -socialized medicine, medical care provided by the state. -socialization, n.
There are 5 different models of socialism. The terms/words by definition cannot be argued. If you want to argue or debate a model of socialism, pick one of the five, and see how many you end up with.
Also, socialism does NOT have to be practiced or engaged in a pure sense of the word to be called by name. It can be bastardized to fit any society or personal experience.
There can be NO denying the fact that America has been practising some forms of socialism for almost 100 years. Those who are trying to deny this are 1. lying to you 2. lying to themselves.
*EDIT
I just want to note that this dictionary was printed in 1995. Over 10 years ago. Way before the term/word "socialism" became popular.

I much prefer that definition thanks. However some people do not use that definition as illustrated above in the thread.CenterBHSFan wrote: From the dictionary on my desk:

I agree we have been doing socialism for even longer than 100 years.
How much socialism is too much?

I think it will be too much when the American people start resisting the governments agenda.
That just so happens to be going on right now.

The New Deal and the Great Society are, along with the creation of the Federal Reserve, the most destructive acts in the history of this country. Our economy will never recover from them.BCSbunk wrote:Wouldn't you consider this the same?CenterBHSFan wrote: I think it will be too much when the American people start resisting the governments agenda.

All the anti-growth, anti-capitalism policies being put forth by the radicals in congress and the White House.
The media double standard, and the media love affair with the radical in the White House.
The political correctness that prevents us from recognizing and dealing with serious issues in a forthright manner.
