As a new supervisor, I will be involved in interviewing applicants for the first time this coming week. All condidtates are currently employed in different roles within the company. There are no external candidates.
Give me some good general questions I could ask...

But to the topic..I have no idea..I'm just a lowly hourly union employee. I do what I'm told. Unless I don't feel like it, then I complain to my union b/c I"m being treated unfairly b/c they are expecting me to do my job. Bastards.

if you could be any animal in the world, what would you be?
what would you say your biggest strength is? biggest weakness?
some of those questions have been proven to tell a lot about someone and to trip people up as wel

Tell me about yourself.
Who is the person that knows you better than anyone else? What are 5 words they would use to describe you?
Tell me about a time you failed?
Of all the generic interview questions, these are the three that I find the most intriguing. The first for obvious reasons as it gives the person the chance to talk about themselves, and you get to see what they think are important enough to mention.
The one about the 5 words, I find interesting because you are not asking them directly to describe themselves, but to put themselves in someone else's shoes. Sure they can BS this, but psychologically it seems to work as they look at themselves from another's perspective.
The fail question is good because people don't like to talk badly about themselves and it's always interesting to see how they respond to this.

Actually, the animal question is a really good idea because there is no wrong answer and it can tell a lot about the interviewee's personality while actually lightening the pressure of the interview.
Since they are all already employed within the company, ask questions to see how much they know about the company already, how much they know about the position they are interviewing for, and ask them what they bring to the table from their old position which can be an attribute to the new position and to the rest of the company and the rest of the co-workers.
And then ask them if they have every seen a grown man naked.
