Saw these about a week ago...the last one, the man that was covered in soot from working in a factory was an amazing photograph.

Love the old storefront picture where they would write the days' headlines on paper and post them for people on the street to read....how times have changed.

Oldest know color photograph - 1872:

Before the Autochrome process was perfected in France, this photograph of a landscape in Southern France was taken. No, it is not hand-tinted. This is a color-photograph. (Note: It was published in a Time/Life Book entitled "Color" in 1972, "courtesey of George Eastman House, Paulus Lesser.") You are looking at the birth of color photography seven years after the American Civil War. 130 years ago this view of Angouleme, France, was created by a "subtractive" method. This is the basis for all color photography, even today. It was taken by Louis Ducos du Hauron who proposed the method in 1869. It was not until the 1930's that this method was perfected for commercial use.

I saw that on Digg last week too and thought it was amazing. The best are the dam pictures, IMO.

I love this picture from justin's link. Ohio's industrial cities have houses like this all over the place that are condemned or run down, it's surreal to see them in color when they were livable.

What?

No, I did a couple of projects in some of my classes where I made HDR( High Dynamic Range) photographs by merging several photos taken from the same vantage point with different white balance levels and then playing around with the exposure in Photoshop. These photos have a similar look in that the capture much of the color without looking washed out or fake.

Was there a comment that was the same?

They do look like some of the better HDR photos I've seen.

that is always stunning...when we think of the past and get a chance to view a glimpse in colour....

to all of us in 2010, we believe everything prior to 1960 only existed in B&W.

also check out retronaut.com for more of these glimpses into the past.
