I may be the only guy on this site that appreciated Peralta. For all of the Tribe's woes the past few years, Peralta was never the problem. Most certainly the money paid him was not wasted. There is something to be said for a player that goes out and does a solid major league job day after day. Sure it's nice to have a team of allstars, but most teams aren't the Yankees. Moreover, 'allstars' that are constantly on the DL don't do your team much good either. the Tribe has wasted a lot of money on guys who have spent a large part of their contracts on the DL.
Hafner, Westbrook, Sizemore...those are guys who didn't earn the high price they were paid. Peralta, on the other hand, was out there every day, doing a workman's job earning a modest salary.
Most managers like guys they can count on....and so does Dave Dombrowski apparently.

i agree that laffey hasnt been given a consistent shot in a role that isnt changing every 2 months...but the point of all this is that THESE ARE NOT PITCHERS YOU BUILD A CLUB AROUND...cleveland continues to stockpile these jamie moyer wannabes

look at the successful teams - they bring in young power pitchers and work towards developing some control in them/use them in trades because they are arms that other teams actually have interest in

as far as gaining velocity id say theres room for A LITTLE improvement...but hes a year in meaning hes been working w pro level strength and conditioning coaches for at least that long...everything ive read says hes almost completely polished meaning there isnt a whole lot they have to fix...bad news because you can always correct a delivery flaw but adding 10+ mph = impossible

agreed...also there was a stat out there floating around a couple years ago saying that peralta was top 5 in the majors in fielding % of plays within his zone...granted his zone is much smaller than others due to his lack of speed/quickness...but still speaks to his reliability and consistency

Its ashame that the good strides that Chisenall has made and he wont be able to play third base at the major league level. If they can fine another position for him to play then thats fine but it wont be 3rd.

I would think so, but the guy doesn't even top out at 90 right now. Even if he adds 2-3 MPH to his fastball he'll still be throwing in the 88-91 range.

The kid is listed at 6'3"...155lbs....a real bean pole. He has the height to take on some weight, and with that some strength. Could very likely add 5-7 MPH easily.

You guys sticking up for Peralta are blind. The only time I remember him playing anything close to consistently good baseball was during the 07' playoffs vs. Boston. Other than that he has been a constant underachiever who never seemed to work on his game. He was a constant rally killer and a defensive liability. Can't see Leyland putting up with his unmotivated play past this year.

Peralta has always been middle of the pack defensively. What he lacks in range, he makes up for in consistency. Other guys make spectacular plays...but then they boot the routine stuff. He is a career .270 hitter with runners in scoring position. That makes him neither a rally killer or a defensive liability, no matter what your perception is. He is not an all star, but neither is he a bum.

Closer to a bum than an all star for sure. Your stat for career batting average with runners in scoring position is a bit misleading. He has consistently been among the league leaders (top 10) in double plays grounded into and strikeouts during his whole career. Also, he committed the second most errors among third baseman in the American League last year. However, Tiger fans are used to that type of defensive consistency at 3rd base. Last years leader for errors was Brandon Inge.

And he starts his Tigers career with a home run off Jon Lester!

Hills...YOUR stats about him having the second most errors, K's, DP s etc are misleading too because Peralta also plays 148 games a year, leads in AB's etc. Such is the case with guys who don't linger on the DL.

Maybe JP's production #'s have been down because he doesn't have anyone else around him in the batting order....now he's with the Kitties....we'll see how he hits.

More and more, the incompetency of the owner and front office becomes apparent. Anybody notice how many ex-tribesman were all stars this year? Guys that couldn't win with the Indians are having big years elsewhere. Three of the top 5 AL pitchers...Pavano Sabathia Lee. Traded for a a bunch of low level and AAAA players because the owner won't take a hit to keep a competitive team on the field.

Hits, your last paragraph is spot on and I have been convinced for quite a while now the Indians won't contend again under Dolan's ownership. As far as Peralta I guess we'll agree to disagree.

I doubt the guy has a multiple homer game the rest of the year. Saturdays 0 for 3 is what Tiger fans should get used to. Wait till he gets back to Comerica and its pitching friendly dimensions. He won't have anything more than warning track power.
