Maurice Clarett has enrolled and has started taking classes at osu. he says he does not want to be any distraction. Hopefully he can get his life turned around.

How do accept a student who has had numerous run ins with the law and just spent 3 1/2 years in prison?

He just took the spot of a kid who always wanted to go to tOSU but his ACT/SAT wasn't high enough. Unreal!

I agree johngrizzly. I have had several family members and friends who were not able to get into OSU right away, they had to to go to a branch college first or Columbus State. These were good kids who actually were very good students in high school and had a decent ACT score. It's a shame a thug like Maurice seems to get in and they could not.

Didn't he take college-credit courses while in prison? I don't see him taking the spot of an incoming freshman. He was already enrolled once at OSU.

I say good for him. Also, don't act like any other college hasn't allowed someone back into school after a stay in prison. He won't get special treatment this time around and if he screws up he is out. Simple as that.

If they couldn't get in then they didn't deserve to get in. It's really as simple as that.

Clarett isn't applying as a freshman, he's already taken credits here, so I assume it's as a transfer, and OSU accepts a large majority of transfers.

Good for him. To all of you that says he's taking a spot of someone more deserving. Unfortunately this happens in all things in life. I bet your a family member in your family has received a break in career, school, sports, etc.

I wish him well.

I wonder if you some of you guys really understand college admissions, or just like spouting off. First of all, Clarett attended as a freshman. He was a student for at least 3quarters. He more than likely is not a freshman. He is not taking any spots from what you think are deserving incoming freshmen, which they aren't. His admission is more than likely being treated like a transfer student or a student from a branch. Most anyone can go to OSU...just not as an incoming freshman. Clarett is not an incoming freshman.

Give the guy a break and let him try to get a degree and give his life purpose....isnt that point of the prison system....rehabilitation?

I'm not tearing anyone down. I merely stated the reality of the situation is that there are a lot of kids who could not get into OSU right away lately who were pretty good students-- and by good students I mean student with GPA's well over 3.0 and a good ACT score). Maurice barely could hack it the last time he was at OSU (IIRC he had a dismal GPA and there were some issues raised by an African-American History Prof). I applaud Clarett if he is in fact turning his life around but it seems it would be fair to give the other kids a fair shake as well.

You clearly do not understand transfer rules.

Admission criteria for domestic transfer students



Academic requirements
Your academic record will be reviewed to determine your eligibility for admission to the university. Once it is determined that you are admissible, you will be considered for enrollment in the college of your intended major (read about college enrollment criteria).

Admission to the university:

If you are applying to the Columbus campus and:

you have earned at least 45 quarter or 30 semester hours after high school graduation, you will be considered for admission on a competitive basis.
you have earned 1 to 44 quarter or 1 to 29 semester hours, we will review your academic performance in college and high school and your performance on the ACT or SAT to determine your eligibility for admission.
you are currently enrolled in your first term of college, both your academic performance in high school and your performance on the ACT or SAT will determine your elibility for admission.

Non-academic factors

Non-academic factors may also be considered if:

you have demonstrated outstanding talent in a particular area
you have significant work experience
your academic performance may have been affected by physical, mental, or learning environment factors
you are eligible for organized support services at Ohio State

Clarett already had the standards when he was first admitted into Ohio State also I would not consider it a transfer myself because he already attended the university.

Guys, I understand transfer rules very well. I understand the difference between requirements in an incoming freshman vs. a transfer. All I am saying is the hypocrisy of IT ALL of the following:

Person #1 Has a High School GPA of 3.8. He participates in extra-curricular activities and is Treasurer of his Senior Class.

Person #2 Enrolls at OSU on an athletic scholarship. While there he is a marginal student. He talks trash about the university and bails after one year. He later gets into legal trouble and spends time in prison on a felony charge.

Now, all I am saying is that person #1 did not get into OSU but person #2 is accepted back into said school. That is where I am coming from-- the overall hypocrisy of it all.

I do wish Maurice well in his attempt to complete his education.

Becuase he was already a member of the University. His past history is irrelevant in your ideology if a person that is a student takes a year off they should not be able to attend again?

What highschool did person #1 attend? What were his ACT scores?

I graduated from high school with a 3.4
Sports were the only extra activities that I was a part of
I was accepted to OSU straight out of high school

I feel like you might be exaggerating to help your argument. I dont think the standards have changed that much over a couple years. I could be wrong

After all the spouting off that Big Ten backers (including Jim Delaney) and fans of THE Ohio State University have done over the last 10 years about "academic standards" and "we're so much better than those criminals down south", I'd have to say I find this pretty funny.

I'm not exactly sure what his ACT score was, although I recall hearing it at one time and thinking it was a good score. I am not going to say what high school because there are many posters on this board from that community and I don't want to "out" him. As someone else pointed out, the standards have been raised for incoming freshmen. My friend is ok- he has been accepted and is attending a private school in the state of New York here in the fall.
