Wow. I hate the steelers, but that is terrible. Prayers to the Cowher family.

Yeah, I feel awful for him and his family. Cowher is one of the good guys.

Shocking! I listen to Pittsburgh sports talk radio every day and no one reported that she was sick, they kept this under wraps big time. I feel for Coach Cowher, skin cancer (melanoma) took my father six years ago and what makes it hard is that if caught early, the survival rate is 99.9%. Just a shame that sometimes you have to lose a loved one in order to be educated about skin cancer. Prayers to "the Chin" and his daughters.

I never knew it either. Must've happened quickly or they just kept it under wraps.

I wonder if she may have been sick for a little while now without anyone really knowing and maybe that's why he has been turning down NFL jobs or at the very least showing no interest in getting back into Coaching?

If she was diagnosed in advanced stages (level 3 or 4), then yeah, it happened quickly. Advanced skin cancer (especially melanoma) is very agressive, spreads like wild fire. My father was diagnosed with late stage 2 melanoma (50% reoccurance), he under went surgery and treatment, was cleared as disease free only to have it came back a year and a half later and it took him in under three months.Non;431259 wrote:I never knew it either. Sorry to hear about you father. How old was he? What prompted him to get checked? My wife and my teenage son both had suspicions moles removed. The moles that were removed were tested and we were told they were precancerous. My wife is always on the look out for this stuff. Her grandfather had this form of cancer although he survived. I thought my wife was being paranoid. But then we got the test results. They may never have become cancerous, but it was best they were removed.

Thanks for your sympathy. My father was 69 when he passed and it was a tiny mole on his upper arm that went cancerous. It was itchy and it changed colors, he thought nothing of it until a friend of his told him to get it checked out. Needless to sat, the news wasn't good. Early detection is the key, I go and get checked every six months. As I said before, it's almost 100% survival rate if caught early.

I wonder if Bill Cowher's house in Strongsville was behind this?

Sorry to hear about your father. Good info, though, on skin cancer.
I'm curious to hear how long they knew about it.
Also, it's interesting to think that Bill stepped away from the game to spend more time with his wife and family. And now that time really was important.
It was a similar type of situation for me. My brother died in a car accident in November of 2004. Around that August I was deciding whether to move in with him for awhile in Columbus or take another job out of state. I hadn't seen him much in the previous few years because he got married and was busy with work and school, going for a masters, and so forth. Ultimately, I decided to stay with him from August until November before he died so looking back it proved to be valuable time, where as if I had moved away and not gotten the chance to speak and interact with him in the months before it would've been a lot worse feeling.

Very sad news. And like you, I hadn't heard anything about her health, so it had to have been quick and hard-hitting AND kept under wraps.rock_knutne;431257 wrote:Shocking! Apparently some assistant coach at MIN (must have been at PIT before, or just a friend of Cowher somehow) didn't say it directly, but strongly intimated this was the reason Cowher stepped away after 2006.
A lot of people thought the lack of passion and drive in 2006 was just satisfaction/stopping to smell the roses, but it would seem he had good reason for his mind being elsewhere.
