I don't believe Clarett was squeaky clean. I'm not sure who financed him, but he was living beyond his means at OSU. I don't really think Tressel knew anything about it, but something funny was going on there. And then Mo shut his mouth for whatever reason and the NCAA had nothing left.
We also had a basketball coach paying at least one prospective player, and Boban was dirty as hell too.

Honest question. Do you really think Tressel had no knowledge of it at all? As much as he seems to be a control freak? I find it kind of laughable that coaches like Meyer, Saban, Carroll, and Butch Davis get crucified on here for similar stuff, yet Tressel is somehow oblivious to it?FatHobbit;429099 wrote:I don't believe Clarett was squeaky clean. I don't know. There was an article in the Dispatch on Clarett when he was a freshman about how he was living off campus and I think Tressel had to know about that. Maybe Clarett had the money for it, but I got the impression he was pretty poor and I wondered then how he was able to pull that off. (I had roommates in college that were on the Hockey team and they got money for room and board, but I thought they had to live in the dorms their freshman year, so something funny was going on.) That was the first time I thought something might be up. And then his car was broken into. I don't remember what kind of car it was, but I remember wondering how he was able to pull that off too.
My point in bringing up Clarett on this thread though, was to point out that it happens everywhere. I think we're kidding ourselves if we think our school (whichever school that might be) is the only school without any cheaters.
I do hate how OSU self reported the O'brien mess and then the school and the players who were left were punished. O'brien was out of a job, but still got millions. Boban went wherever he went and never had any repercussions. Whoever the recruit was went to the NBA and never had any repurcussions. I don't have a better solution, because the NCAA is limited in what they can do, but that just seems dumb.

Wow.....South Caronlina, Florida, Bama and now Georgia. Now wonder the SEC is so good...they pay better then everybody else!! 4 teams in SEC getting a close look by the NCAA....by my count, thats over 30% of the SEC currently be looked it. SEC is tops in yet another category!

Pouncey claims he did nothing wrong just like reggie bush so im not sure why you think we should make a new thread except your a florida fan. I dont even blame the player, coach or school the ncaa has to do something about these agents. Until the ncaa clears him its a story just like everywhere else

Did Troy Smith accept money from an agent or was it a booster? I think it was a booster, because I'm pretty sure Chris Gamble worked one summer for that same booster.

Troy Smith got $275 & transportation for working a church sponsored football camp in TN the summer between his Jr / Sr year. Later - Gator...better worry 'bout the stinky pile comin' outa Gainesville before you just go makin' up stuff.

I'm pretty sure that he also got paid around $500 by a local car dealer (who happened to be a booster) for work he never did. That's why he was suspended for two games.

He was suspended for two games by Tressel for breaking "team rules" ...and as is Tress' policy the reason is never publically revealed. So I'm calling BS on your "local car dealer" story because he would have gotten much worse from the NCAA for accepting booster cash.

Then an NCAA investigation determined he took $500 from an Ohio State booster in the spring of 2004. He had to repay the money, sit out the Buckeyes' bowl game and the 2005 opener.

Yeah Smith did take the money I believe he said to pay a cell phone bill off if i remember correctly. The football camp issue was money provided by Steve Mcnair i believe and violated rules because Steve had an agent or something dumb like that. The deal is the NCAA is cracking down on everyone. One kid taking money can ruin a program for years.

No more Tiernan.
The NCAA and the NFL really need to work together somehow and get this fixed. In Troy's case it was a booster and not an agent, but these boosters can be just as bad. Rhett Bomar was kicked off the team a few years back at Oklahoma for accepting cash from a local dealership.

I blame this on the kids, but almost as much on the scumbag wanna-be agents. I heard the other day that there are over 1300 agents registered with the NFL (or somthing similar)...I guess they have to register before they can negotiate for a player. So what do these scumbags do???? They register as an agent, then lurch around these kids in college (mostly during breaks and the summer), and try to entice them to sign with them or commit to them before they graduate by offering cash, travel, parties, whatever. Most of the time the coaches may not even know about it, but they get slammed for it. This type of action is totally different than boosters coughing up cash - I think that is totally known by the coaching staff. They'll never get rid of these scumbag agents.
By the way, it's not the big time agents, it's wannabe losers trying to land their first big paycheck (10% of $2 or $3 mllion is a pretty nice payday).

The big difference between Reggie Bush and Pouncey is Bush never cooperated or provided a paper trail, Pouncey has done all of this.

Just curious rock, what kind of paper trail did he provide? (I'm not comparing Bush or Pouncey, just trying to understand.)

from and article on espn.com:
The sources told Schad that the Pounceys have provided phone, bank and credit card statements that do not show any large payments.

Sure you could but Pouncey also claims his funds came from a deferred line of credit which isn't uncommon with players who have a high draft projection. If that's his story and he's cooperating with the investigation then he must have the proof to back it up.
Again, the big difference is Bush offered no cooperation what so ever, Pouncey has been very cooperative.
