Cassettes would be stupid. Those just sound worse than everything (except 8-track).

there is good music coming out just about every day, you just have to look for it. please dont tell me that a lazy, unappreciative, college student can find good music and you hardworking older gents cant.

This is like arguing over what sex position is the best. I mean really, sometimes you prefer one thing over another.....but when it really comes down to it, you're still having sex, which is awesome.
If you can't tell, I'm a fan of all generations of music, and all types. Some things I like more than others, and I can find some glimmers of hope even in the modern things on the radio. The Beatles rock, but to act as if the music they created was somehow better than all generations after it is pretty dumb. The Beatles' weren't very creative when it came to lyrics most of the time, but there are a few things that make them overly impressive in my eyes. The SHEAR VOLUME of good music that came from them in what amounted to not a terribly long career, and the harmonies you can hear in almost every song of theirs.

yeah im not sure why its "coming back", ive only seen it on small scale limited run DIY releases from either bands themselves or really small DIY labels. happening more in the new wave of Youth Crew style hardcore bands.

Everyone knows the best music comes from Soulja Boy.

You also have to realize that what you hear from the 60's has a couple of things going for it:
1) You hear mostly just the good stuff. You take the best from the last 10 years and it might not quite stand up, but you filter out 95% of the stuff and it's going to seem a lot better in comparison
2) 60's music is and continues to be popular in movies and tv for establishing a mood to capture the time period. That creates a pretty powerful nostalgia factor, even if you weren't around then. You're seeing this to some extent with 80's music now.
80's music is a very interesting corollary. I'm sure people were talking about how it sucked back in the 80's, just like today. I'm sure Madonna and Bon Jovi had their detractors, as well. I can't remember listening to much 80's when I was in college. The genre has definitely been revived for me I think, again, in large part because of the nostalgia factor. We could certainly sit here and bash a lot of 80's music as garbage, radio sell-out pop like people do with today's stuff.
I can agree that a lot of groups today, their songs (from that group) all sound alike. But, IMO, that doesn't mean 1 or 2 of their songs is not original and good music. You can say the group sucks, and that may be fair, but that doesn't mean those 1 or 2 songs won't stand the test of time, especially many years from now when you aren't sick of hearing it from overplay and it comes on the radio and reminds you of a great time in your younger days.
I think another thing that probably hurts a lot of these groups today is the IPods and burned CD's and instant gratification. In the old days, unless you bothered with swapping out a CD or cassette, you listened to the entire album for long stretches at a time and songs grew on you. I don't really even listen to my old albums I used to any more - every once in a while I'll listen to 3-4 or 5 songs from an artist I like and then move on to another artist or album.

Well also we can get new music all the time. So we don't have to listen to anything that we don't really like. If I had to drive to the store every time I wanted some new music I'd probably listen to the same things I have more often and they'd grow on me.

why is it that people over sentimentalize the past when it comes to music? Its true of pretty much any subject, but is most acute with music
