iPod touch (8GB) fell off a chair onto my driveway and the screen cracked. Probably a 18" fall. Not very far. Still works fine, but there s a crack and in one place it shattered.
Question... what is the best way to go about returning it? Apple care is up in about one month.

You near Columbus? There is an Apple store at Easton.

Closest store to me is Ann Arbor. Is it worth my trip, or will they tell me to ef off?

OK, while most of my threads are stupid and worthless, I am actually being serious here, and would like some help
I know that it is tough to return an iPod/iPhone with impact damage. What is the best way to "lie" about it?

What would I say to them over the phone? Basically, if I am going to DRIVE to Ann Arbor, I want to get a return. I like the whole calling them idea, but what do I say to them?

I have a feeling that they won't buy that story, flag the return, and I won't be able to return it anywhere.

there's no way they let you return it. you say applecare is up in 1 month? meaning you've had it for almost 2 years? yeah, they won't let you return it. they will swap it out for you for 199 or something around that price.

Id just tell them what really happened. Im guessing they wont give you a new 1 but just replace the screen.

Yep...that's exactly what I predict is going to happen no matter what you "tell" them.

5 of my good friends have iPhones, and 3 of them have had cracked screens which needed to be replaced.

No, the "and?" was asking "Did they get them replaced for free?"

Apple Care won't cover user damage such as dropping it.
Your best bet is to travel to Ann Arbor, explain to them what happened and be incredibly nice and tactful about it. When I worked at Apple we literally had hundreds of refurbs in the back and the biggest deciding factor in whether or not we would replace someones ipod for user damage was if they were nice or not to the Apple employee.

Try this. Being nice usually works.

Took it to the tech director at my school (we're 100% Mac) and he said there is no chance in hell they will take the claim. So... I bought a Macbook and got a free iPod.

If the LCD panel wasn't broken and only the glass was broken, you could have picked up a kit online for under $20.
