When the pain finally reaches a breaking point, expect to see a VAT or some sort of national sales tax. It's about the only solution I can see, short of big cuts to entitlements. At the end of the day, we are building a European-style social system (yuk) but have neither the tax base nor the rates to support it. But the tax base is going in the wrong direction.

Me, personally, it makes absolutely 0 sense to give someone a handout and then turn-around and tax them when they spend that handout. But that's just me. Again, it's the middle class that is and will continue to suffer the most in terms of seeing more and more of their discretionary income get taken away to be given to the "poor". It does create a rather large disincentive to work hard and succeed. It's the proverbial hampster wheel.

First, you know as well as I that slashing the size of government will never happen. Politicians on both sides of the aisle will not do it because it means losing political and economic power....not to mention votes.

Second, every time slashing government pops up the MSM fuels up the "look at the starving masses" hysteria and then the politicians bury their heads in the sand.

Third, the environmentalist nut jobs will not stand for allowing the Feds to sell off land assets.

Bottom-line: Good luck with that.

Imagine that:

President Obama's national health care law will cost $1.76 trillion over a decade, according to a new projection released today by the Congressional Budget Office, rather than the $940 billion forecast when it was signed into law.
Democrats employed many accounting tricks when they were pushing through the national health care legislation, the most egregious of which was to delay full implementation of the law until 2014, so it would appear cheaper under the CBO's standard ten-year budget window and, at least on paper, meet Obama's pledge that the legislation would cost "around $900 billion over 10 years." When the final CBO score came out before passage, critics noted that the true 10 year cost would be far higher than advertised once projections accounted for full implementation.
Today, the CBO released new projections from 2013 extending through 2022, and the results are as critics expected: the ten-year cost of the law's core provisions to expand health insurance coverage has now ballooned to $1.76 trillion. That's because we now have estimates for Obamacare's first nine years of full implementation, rather than the mere six when it was signed into law. Only next year will we get a true ten-year cost estimate, if the law isn't overturned by the Supreme Court or repealed by then. Given that in 2022, the last year available, the gross cost of the coverage expansions are $265 billion, we're likely looking at about $2 trillion over the first decade, or more than double what Obama advertised.

Quaker - The Left cannot refute the current scoring as they prayed at the CBO's temple of magical algorithms during the ObamaKare debates. If it was correct then, it's gotta be correct today. How are they going to pay for it now?

I think it was gut that said a national sales tax (or VAT) is coming at us sooner rather than later to AUGMENT the current tax code. Stealing more of the evil rich's fortunes won't solve a thing...the real dollars to satisfy their lust for utopia must come from the middle class. I think the VAT will start small...like maybe 3%...that way they'll be able to say, "look how small it is and how much it will provide for everyone!" Just like the income tax and FICA taxes...start small and then expand it later. In the end, we are at the end.

We're going to be "gifted" with a health care plan we are forced to purchase, and fined if we don't, which purportedly covers at least ten million more people, without adding a single new doctor, but provides for 16,000 new IRS agents, written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that didn't read it but exempted themselves from it, and signed by a moronic President who smokes, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, for which we'll be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect, by a government which has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's broke!!!!! What the hell could possibly go wrong?

^^^This. Pretty readily obvious. The stimulus flushed hundreds of billions down the toilet and was essentially little more than govt welfare - for the state and for govt workers. If the stimulus created economic value, we haven't seen it.

Because you fail to grasp the obvious. The implication of that is jobs coming back, but at the expense of wages and standard of living. It is not a preferred scenario. We want BETTER jobs, not bring back most of the crap sent overseas. Liberals ignore that point because it doesn't play in their class warfare game - the jobs going overseas are significantly lower wages, making it a profitable move even AFTER the added transportation and management/distribution expense. Such a reality is global, by the way - China is already seeing some of those jobs going to even lower cost producers. Liberals piss in the wind and then tell you it's mostly just water.

Keep shaking your head and maybe that shat it's filled with will start falling out. I mean, really, how did you get that I was implying only liberals want a lower unemployment rate? I see why you rarely attempt to think for yourself because you fail so miserably at it when you try.

This should surprise no one with a brain. It would have been quite the trick to increase demand with a mandate and have prices come down significantly, if at all.

The US subsidizes global healthcare and medical devices. We fund the R&D. And I'm cool with that. Besides, it's not like the US is a net-loser in the global subsidy game (i.e. compare interest rates or what Europe pays for gas, for example).
