The oldest (14) pulled the hammy last night during his game. He played on it the rest of the game, and was in pain by the time we got home.

We iced the leg for 45 minutes when we got home, but now what?? Do we ice and use heat both or just ice???

I don't think you want to use heat...I would just keep icing it, keep it elevated and wrap it up tightly. It will take a few weeks to get back to 100%

Depending on the severity it could take a looooooooonnnnngggg time and he could be at risk of pulling it again. Rest is the best medicine.

That's what sucks....he has a game tomorrow and if they win, they'll possibly be back in the championship. Plus football lifting/training 4 days a week. Gonna be tough to keep him down. how do you wrap it??? Tape or flex

no heat for the first 72 hours, then you can alternate heat and ice...but it is very important to ice 5 time a day for 20 minutes at a time now since the injury was recent

Yeah. It depends on the level of the strain. 1st degree could take anywhere from a week to week and a half. 2nd degree could take 2-3 weeks. 3rd degree could take up to month and a half or two months. If you need to hurry up the process you might want to take him somewhere where he can get some ultrasound or electrical stim

I tore my hamstring last summer playing softball. The main thing I want to stress that my physical therapist stressed to me was that during re-cooperation, it's important that you don't do very difficult stretches. It's going to feel like you want to stretch it like you normally do before a game or a run, but just small, low-intensity stretches and exercises are what you want to do until you're further into the rehabilitation process. I'm not sure how bad your son's hamstring is, but that was a big part of mine... If you stretch it too hard while rehabbing, you could tear it before you actually get back on a field, or just prepare it to be pulled or torn again. I was told if you re-tear a hamstring, it'll give you problems the rest of your life.

Good luck! I was out of full-out sprinting and activity for about 3-4 months. I was able to start jogging lightly an running 5k's about a month or two into it.

R.I.C.E.

Rest Ice Compression Elevation. Also taking an anti-inflammatory is clutch. I pulled my quad a month ago. I was out about a week. It still hurts but good enough to go. Gotta be very persistent with the treatment above.

Also, if he wants to go to physical therapy he can get that ultrasound treatment which will break up that imflammation and speed recovery.

He needs to have it looked at and ultrasounded. This isn't something that you want to leave to chance.

Yeah, get it looked at. Not worth it being a problem for months.

He will probably want to rest it tomorrow, to be honest. He can push that 3-5 to a 10 in a hurry if he doesn't.
