This. I give putts to my old man if we are playing as well, because he said otherwise I am out of the will.

It's the NEXT shot that is good...although I have played with guys that thought like that.

That's probably why he missed the putt. He probably hasn't had to attempt a putt that short in a while.

Definition of "holed"
A ball is "holed" when it is at rest within the circumference of the hole and all of it is below the level of the lip of the hole.

It is very frustrating to play with fellow-competitors who do not have a clue concerning the rules of golf. Most issues with the rules can be clarified by having a good grasp of the "definitions" of the rules of golf.

ZWICK ... what does the rule book say, word for word, for this situation? Since this is a "rule book" thread, it only makes sense to post what the rule book says.

17-4. Ball Resting Against Flagstick
When a player's ball rests against the flagstick in the hole and the ball is not holed, the player or another person authorized by him may move or remove the flagstick, and if the ball falls into the hole, the player is deemed to have holed out with his last stroke; otherwise, the ball, if moved, must be placed on the lip of the hole, without penalty

My dad started playing at age 50 so he wasn't exactly what I would call "good" for quite some time. He has since retired and gotten his H-cap down to 13. The putts are not given anymore. He played because I took up the game first, and he never really played. I have never let him give me putts because I have always been in competition mode, and you get rusty on short ones if you don't always putt them in.

When we're playing a quick rd I'll give people bogies.

Normally we make people putt out anything else.

I agree, I hate people who don't have a firm grasp of the rule book
