Any serious runners have a recommendation for a GPS-type mechanism to track training distances/pace/etc? The only one I'm really aware of is Garmin Forerunner, and I'm far from a serious runner so I haven't the faintest idea what bells and whistles someone might want or need.

Garmin has the best products that I am aware of. I have and use the 305. I know the 405 is out now, but I will probably just stick with my 305 for what I use it for. You may be able to find a used one somewhere if someone is upgrading to the 405.

I'm not sure how much those Garmin products are (I'm sure they're not cheap), but if you have a smart phone (I have the iPhone) I recommend the iMapMyRun app. It works in conjunction with the website and works pretty good.

My daughter had some kind of Nike shoes she could put her iPod in? I really have no clue what it was exactly or what it did. Hell, I could have dreamed this and it's not even true. I do that sometimes.

If it makes you feel better, I'm aware of that, too. You didn't just make it up :)

More specifics again (can you tell I hadn't had my caffeine yet when I posted?)

I'm looking for something in a watch/armband, or that will work with the Ipod. Neither he nor I run with our phones so that sort of stuff is out.

i dont use GPS, i only run on tracks or places with known distances like running/hiking/bike trails. i just dont trust them. i would hate to run a distance only to find out it didnt get a signal or the program shut down or battery died and it didnt record my run. plus i dont want something strapped to my arm or waist or whatever when i run....haha so now that i added nothing to the thread, i'll go.

Agreed. 405 is the best although I only know this from talking to other runners. I'll continue to use the archaic 201 until it plays out, then get another version. I'm tighter than the bark on a tree.

www.gmap-pedometer.com is a good site. Still, if you're looking for accuracy while you're running, nothing beats Garmin products.

Glad to see that I'm not the only cheapskate hanging on to his Garmin 201 until it dies!! :D

I think I'm going to go with the Nike+ for Ipod. I'm just not sure he'd wear the Garmin watch or Nike+ band. We both run with our Ipods, though. I may end up getting one for me, too, even though I haven't been hitting the pavement all that hard :(

Hey...I still have a 201. I love it. I don;t anything more than what it does.

How is your battery holding out???? I do seem to have lost some longevity with it.

Battery seems to still be okay, I can go about 13-14 hours between charges.

Timex makes a GPS watch that retails for ~$275.00 for an extra $75 you can get a heart rate monitor. I have no idea if it is any good. You can find it on the timex website and it is sold at REI.
