They will carry it up the steps and set it up--I actually won't be home at the time, and Mrs. FFT is 9 months pregnant, so we're paying an extra $100 or so to have them take it up the stairs and set everything up. I don't want to stiff them or anything, but I also don't want to shell out anything that isn't customary, as we're already paying a few thousand bucks to purchase this and have it delivered/set up.
FWIW, we also tip pizza delivery guys ($1 per item, plus the change to round up to the nearest dollar if paying with a credit card), waitresses (min. of 15%, and typically 18-20% if the service was solid), hotel/airport luggage guys ($1/bag). The issue here isn't being stingy, it's just my genuine lack of knowledge about whether a tip is appropriate in this situation. It's tough to know when we should/shouldn't tip in situations that don't often come up.

It might just be me, but if you're already paying extra for them to carry it upstairs and set it up I wouldn't feel the need to tip.

Attentive falls under "just doing their job". Other countries (mostly European) pay their waiters higher base pay but they get less from tips. Which is the way it should be. Tips should be a bonus for going above and beyond. In the US it's expected because we pay a smaller base salary to them.wildcats20;390023 wrote:I won't tip if a waitress/waiter is "just doing her/his job." If she/he is good and attentive and all that, then of course I will tip. But if I get a lazy, slow worthless waitress/waiter, hell no I won't tip. A tip is not guaranteed nor required. I will tip if I think it is earned; and I will say I am very generous when I tip.
As for the furniture, I don't know what's customary but you'd probably be okay without it as I doubt these guys are being paid a wage where they are expected to make much more via tips. However, 5 or 10 dollars probably wouldn't break your bank and might make their day a bit better.

Thanks! The due date is July 13, so we're rapidly coming up on the date. I thought about announcing it on the OC awhile back, but I figured all the "cool story bro" responses probably made it not worthwhile. We're going to have a son, and we've been busy setting up the nursery, installing the car seat, etc. Lots of fun and lots of excitement--it makes me feel old (married, have a career, own a home, now having a kid . . . crazy). I was posting on the Huddle back when I was in high school, and it doesn't feel like I've gotten that much older over the past decade or so.

My niece was due on July 13th last year and was born on the 6th. Obviously not the same as having my own...but she is amazing. I can't believe her 1st birthday is almost here. Time flies.
Do you have a name picked out?

If you don't, might I suggest Voltron?

This. if you are paying an extra 100 bucks, i would assume that it is going to the delivery guys anyway.

Yes, we have a name picked out, though I'm sworn to secrecy on it. Voltron was in the running, as were Killer, Butch, and Gus. Mrs. FFT wasn't quite on board with my suggestions, so we'll go for something a little less militant.

lol same situation, kinda. we were all drinking ordered some pizza. fred opened the door and handed the money to the guy, i saw the look on his face when he saw us drinking, fred closed the door and i jumped up and yelled "wait! ask him if he wants a beer!" fred opens the door and asks and of course the dude says yet. so they reach for one of the beers that were waiting and i said hell no! gotta give him a cold one.
best tip of his night for sure.
did this at wendy's too. i had 2 cases and a 12 pack in my front seat, was at the drive through and the guy was like man, can i get one of them. i asked how many people were working n if they had a manager. it was like 6 people and no "real" manager i guess. idk. but anyways i traded 6 beers for a couple frostys and some nugs.

I know tipping movers is customary but not sure about getting furiture delivered. My friends familys owns a pizza shop and they charge 1.99 delivery fee and the driver doesnt get a cent of it. The 1.99 goes toward his salary that the store pays his as well as the owners pocket. He also told me some stores give .25 to .50 cents of the delivery charge to the driver but never more. So to whoever assumes the money is going to the delivery guy is wrong hes working for a small amount and relies on tips to make anything their salary usually just covers their taxs so they dont even get a paycheck. If you dont want to tip use your gas and time to pick up the pizza.

Nice.
I'd trade a few beers for nuggs and Frosty's any day
