Here is a hint for managers that are prone to overmanage: If the pitcher who starts the inning starts it off with and out(Clippard), let him stay in until at least he lets a runner reach base.

Yes, that Wednesday game when they had a chance to beat Carpenter in that one inning where they had the good opportunity, is what probably put them in the deep malaise that was evident in the Friday game, even with the day off in between.

Or realize that Matt Capps, who couldn't cut it as the closer for the PIRATES and has been burned TONS by the Reds, shouldn't come into the game EVER. The guy pitched so far over his head for the first 6 weeks of the seasons, you have to know you are tempting fate every time he comes in. Had Storen and Clippard pitched the entire thing for the Nats, the Reds lose 2-1.

Capps allowed 73 hits in 54 innings last year and had an ERA near 6. As I said before, the Pirates let him go. The Pirates have the 3rd worst ERA in MLB. Against the Reds in his career, Capps has allowed 19 ER in 27 innings and has blown 5 of his 14 save chances against them. His career ERA against Cincinnati is 6.33, the worst against any opponent he has ever faced.

How come when Dusty decides it is "day-off day" he does it in bulk? It has killed the Reds a few times before and almost did again today. When you put a guy on the bench, just limit it to one. Taking Gomes, Rolen, and Hernandez out of the lineup in the same day is asking for it. Nothing against the bench guys but those guys have been driving in a ton of runs (except Corky. He's bad).

How Corky Miller is our 3 option at Catcher is beyond me. In all of major league baseball and AAA Corky Miller is good enough to play at this level. I find it hard to believe. He must be one heckuva caller for younger pitchers.

Then again, I probably shouldn't be so hard on him. Catcher is the toughest position in baseball and has the least amount of depth. David Ross is a viable 2 in atlanta and Benito Santiago hung on 10 years longer than I think most people thought he would.

In Corky's defense, many, many other teams have thought he was a good option to have as a veteran AAA catcher. I remember when he was in Atlanta, they said he handled pitcher's as good as any catcher they ever had there. That's saying something from that organization. He's always hit decent in AAA as well. He's definitely not a major league caliber catcher, but he's not the problem filling in 3-4 games a season when there is an injury.

I'm fine with Corky being the #3 waiting in Louiville until needed. I thought the two most important off season signings were Gomes and Miller(ahead of Cabrera). I'm also fine with the three regulars being given the start off, but I would have preferred Janish to Cairo on 3B. With that big park, defense is all the more important.

Just waiting on the 1st team to go on a sustained slump.

I can't fathom a sustained slump with Carpenter and Wainright....both are pretty much top 10 in MLB starting pitchers.

Yeah there is no way the Cards are going to go into a sustained slump..the biggest slump they'll have they just got out of, and were only what? a game out of first when it was done?

The Cards will win the division, there is no doubt in my mind about that. The Cards are just too good and have too much pitching. The Reds however will definitely be there in the end for the Wild Card.

I could see the Cards winning as few as 86-88 games and the Reds with a bullpen and solid starting could win that many as well.
