So, my soon to be 8 year old son approaches me, a few weeks ago, and asked if he can start getting an allowance. He wants to get payed to do things like: (his list of things) straighten up shoes, clean off table, do dishes, clean his room, etc etc etc.
I told him no, that he does not need to get payed to do those things, and that I did not get an allowance when I was growing up, nor did my wife. I dont agree with the idea, and Im sure some will call me a douche, whatever.
I did however, when I was around 11, start mowing lawns in the neighbor hood, and had a paper route for a minute. My parents lived paycheck to paycheck as it was. Hell, I had a part time (three days a week) job when I was 15 doing drywall.
My question(s) is:
How many here received an allowance when they were a kid?
Do you have kids, and give them one?

I got an allowance for going above and beyond my chores. I also did chores for the farm across the street for money, but until I was about 13 there wasn't much they would let me do.

We never gave our 3 daughters allowance. If they need something we got it for them if they wanted to buy something or have a few bucks to go out with we gave it to them.
That way they had to be on their best behavior or it was difficult to ask dad that is pissed for anything...

Just tell him those are a woman's jobs. But yes, I did get an allowance..and yes, I give my son money. I don't give him an 'allowance' per say. He doesn't get a set amount week after week...if he does something without being told...or helps me doing something big for an 8 year old...like mowing the grass (which he loves to do)..I'll throw a few bucks his way.

Some tasks at home are just part of living there. Having the opportunity to earn money for other jobs is a good lesson IMO.

We did - sort of. The kids were responsible for certain things around the house (cleaning up and doing dishes, rounding up and sorting the dirty clothes, etc - but we'd put up "extra" jobs that they did get paid for (cutting grass, staining the fence and deck, cleaning out the hot tub, etc.).

I view allowances as being similar to the age-21 drinking limit. If you are withheld from participating in an activity, it makes the activity more desirable and subject to abuse. Whether it is overdrinking or overspending, the lack of experience can lead to problems. I think we got a very modest allowance, something to effect of $1 every two weeks (i.e., my Dad's pay periods) when we were very little, even younger than 8. We could spend it, save it, or pool it. When we got old enough to work on my grandfather's and other neighbors' farms the concept ended since we had real work to do.

when I was 9, i got $9 a week (3 i was allowed to spend, 3 i had to save up for something i really wanted, and 3 i had to save for a while for my dad to eventually invest). When I turned 12, i got $12 every week (4 spend, 4 save, 4 invest), at 15 same thing, $15 a week (5,5,5). From 17 til now I work hard in the summer to make money for the year to spend, dont get shit from my parents. The whole process of allowance (spending, saving, investing) has really helped me be more financially responsible (knowing when I get a 300 paycheck for a week, i put at least 3/4 in the bank and I can have the rest to spend during the week). I think doing something like this for your son could be beneficial in the end (even if you wanted to start at $6 (2,2,2)).

I'm torn on the issue. I never really had an allowance that was regular but since it was infrequent that I asked to buy shit my parents would usually get it if I asked for it long enough (and usually I paid for about half of it with money that I either didn't spend on lunch/snacks, found in the couch/laundry, or got in birthday cards/Christmas gifts).
I understand that a kid should learn to work to get the things he wants and not expect handouts but I also feel that with the right prodding an allowance system can serve as a valuable learning tool for concepts like saving, fiscal responsibility, etc.

I like the concept of giving an allowance but forcing the kid to invest 1/2, but I think 8 might be a little young to understand that kind of concept.

Both our boys have money that they have been saving from birthdays and the such. But, I just dont think they are old enough yet to have to work around the house, just to earn some extra money. Childhood should be fun, not working just to buy a $15 toy from walmart or something. I also try and get them the things they want, and dont pull the old, "Well, you have money, buy it yourself" card.

I had an allowance, but it wasn't until I was about 10 or 11. That way I got several years of my parents teaching me about financial responsiblility and how to manage my money before I got my first "real" job at 16.

I never got an allowance for doing what I should have been doing anyway or for doing anything particularly special.
But I never really asked for one, so maybe that was my fault lol, I just wasn't a born shyster!
I do remember doing some chores of my 2nd oldest brother when he was hurt and got a few bucks for that. (feeding his horse and pigs and whatnot)
But, when I was at my aunts house, she would give me an allowance for cutting the grass, hanging laundry and helping with her garden. $$$$$

I got an allowance until I was old enough to get a job (paper route, mow the lawn). It wasn't much, like $10 a month or somethin...I don't know. But hell, what does a 10 year ol need money for anyway?

I got an allowance. But I don't see it as an allowance if you worked for it. And now that I look back, I got screwed. I did far more than 30 dollars a week worth of work lol.
