i was actually just talking about this with a friend. she has known about 10 people from her really small highschool that have died since graduating less than 9 years ago. non were from natural causes or diseases. one person just recently overdosed on drugs when only a few months ago, his friend died from drugs. even though that kid obviously just witnessed first hand what could happen, he decided to continue down that path. another 3 kids were killed in a car accident while still in school. after it happend everyone was going around preaching wear your seatbelt and all that stuff. a few months later, those same people were the ones speeding through town recklessly and without seat belts on.
I graduated in 2005 and we've had 11 people that either were IN high school or who had recently graduated from our high school who have been killed since we graduated. We're averaging over 2 per year, in a town of less than 2k people....not good. And it's not fun. I know how it feels, many times over for the friends and family of this guy. Peace and comfort be with them, RIP young man.
wow, sounds a lot like my friend. her graduating class was about 100.

yeah, mine was like 125. Some have been older, some have been younger, and some were our age. But regardless, it takes its toll in a town where everybody, and I do mean EVERYBODY knows everybody. Kinda like if you don't know you're buisiness, don't worry because someone else does kind of thing. It's been bad, and we've gone about 6 months now without anything bad, so a lot of people are getting a little nervous, because if the pattern of the last several years holds up, we're due for another tragedy soon.

Lots of people jump into quarries. Lots of people drive in cars. Just because somebody dies doing something doesn't mean we stop doing it.

Whens the last time someone died in a car accident and someone said "never understood why people drive in cars"

Accidents happen. And thats all this was is an accident.

What a shame.

Thoughts are with his family and friends.

Really enjoyed watching him play football, loved his running style.

Thoughts and prayers go out.

I've got a question, why is it considered so dangerous to swim in a Quarry? And what are the air pockets?

Man, this is just tragic. Really hits home, I used to cliff jump off waterfalls and into old mine holes in my hometown, after being told NUMEROUS times by my parents not to. Even slipped on a rock once that nearly sent me headfirst down the falls, but I grabbed my buddies arm to prevent the fall. Just hearing this brings me back to those "carefree summers" that, in retrospect, could have reaped a similar sad story. RIP, truly a sad day.

Yeah I'm not familiar with quarries, what's the issue with them? Why are they so dangerous?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quarry
Water-filled quarries can be very deep with water, often 50 feet or more, that is often surprisingly cold. Unexpectedly cold water can cause a swimmer's muscles to suddenly weaken; it can also cause shock and even hypothermia.[2] Though quarry water is often very clear, submerged quarry stones and abandoned equipment make diving into these quarries extremely dangerous. Several teenagers and young men and women drown in quarries each year.[3][4] However, many inactive quarries are converted into safe swimming sites.

There are rocks everywhere (sometimes unstable), that tends to be the biggest issue, but the water is sometimes colder than other places because the ground has been dug below the water table. If you look at recent news stories, there are plenty of kids around the country that have died jumping into quarries the past few years:

That still doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Wouldn't there be the same risk in swimming in the ocean? What about a Lake?

I don't know if we will ever know, but do people think this was a result of him getting stuck on something, hitting his head or what?

It's mostly a combination of diving from a high place, lots of rock, sometimes unstable rock, and colder-than-usual water.

Generally, from my understanding, quarries are dangerous for a few reasons. First, they are usually deep. Since they are mined areas they can easily be 50-100 feet deep, or deeper. However, I understand that may not have been the case with this particular spot where a report I read stated the water may have only been about 10 feet deep. Second, because they are deep the water is very often cold. It may be warmer near the surface but gets quite cold the deeper you go. I presume this could lead to cramps or loss of breath (i.e. the cold will take your breath away). Finally, jumping into a quarry isn't like walking into a lake where it gets deeper the further from shore you get. A quarry lake, because it is a mined area is deep immediately.

This is my understanding of why a quarry lake make be unsafe. I could be wrong on each point.

A few questions:

What does depth have to do with anything? If you cant touch the bottom and stand it doesn't matter if its 10ft deep or 1,000 ft. right?
The cold part I get but didnt his buddies jump right along with him and not have a problem with the cold water?

This really sad, but doesn't make much sense to me.

Awful news. Thoughts and prayers are with the family. Also feel terrible for his friends, apparently they waited close to 90 minutes before they called for help because they thought he was playing around. I hope those kids are ok as well

I would guess that the depth is because at 10' deep your friends can jump in and save you, but the deeper the water is the harder it is to help.

Also, I've been in a pool that was 4' deep and there were definite places where it was significantly colder. Again, I'm just guessing, but I imagine there could be really cold pockets of water that an unlucky person might jump into, while his friends jump beside him and miss.

This is a very sad story.

well, i guess if he jumps in and becomes disoriented, he may swim in what he thinks is up and be going the wrong way. in shallow water, that wouldnt be bad, you might only swim 10ft down and realize you hit the bottom maybe and go the other way and still be able to hold your breath. when i went whitewater rafting they stressed that if you fall out of the boat, dont try and swim up, just let yourself float back to the top because you'll probably be a little disoriented.

That's what I was thinking, even if you jumped in and hit freezing water, just do nothing and you will at least float to the top. It is so easy to say things like that when its not you involved though.

This quarry is about 10mins from my house. Last year myself and 3 of my friends went there and I was scared out of my mind to jump in. Just to get to the quarry is a feat in it's self. Very sad to hear this as I've hung out with Rico a couple of times before this happened. RIP Rico.

Prayers from Hilliard.

I believe the quarry's name is Marble Cliff.
