Actually, having grown up a military brat, you'd be amazed by how serious of an issue this is for people from different parts of the country. There are other regional differences, but it seems that how you say "soda" or "pop" grates on people.
I've also met people who have called it sodie, sodie pop and soda water.

Soda pop just sounds so weird to me, what is this the 1950s with soda jerks still around?

Soda, but obviously I am in the minority as I grew up and currently live on the East coast.
Other differences I noticed when I went to OSU:
*I say sneakers, you say tennis shoes
*I would call pizza places and ask for a large pie, and would get confused silence or baffled questions
*The guys I hung out with from Newark, OH coined "banging a girl" as fingering her, and not having sex with her, which is what I mean when I say that

Well you can get an egg cream as well.tk421 wrote: Soda pop just sounds so weird to me, what is this the 1950s with soda jerks still around?
My favorite is "pizza pie", no one unless they live northeast of DC or in south Florida (i.e., the further south in Florida you are, the further north you really are) says pizza pie. Chocolate pie is pie. Strawberry pie is pie. A pizza is a pizza.

That's not the weirdest one, in jersey, any sauce without meat is called "gravy"Manhattan Buckeye wrote:Well you can get an egg cream as well.tk421 wrote: Soda pop just sounds so weird to me, what is this the 1950s with soda jerks still around?

Really? That is new to me. Spaghetti gets sauce, at least in every Jersey town that I have been. Maybe its a South Jersey thing?LJ wrote:That's not the weirdest one, in jersey, any sauce without meat is called "gravy"Manhattan Buckeye wrote:Well you can get an egg cream as well.tk421 wrote: Soda pop just sounds so weird to me, what is this the 1950s with soda jerks still around?

gotcha, that makes sense ... lots of Philly influence down there, and they practically have their own language hahaLJ wrote:Bingo, my cousin's husband and his family are from Buena, which is like 30 minutes from Atlantic City.BigAppleBuckeye wrote:Really? Called it pop until I started at college. My roomate there was from Massachusetts, and between him saying soda, and that being what was on the machines at work (waited tables and had to ring in sodas), I started using the term soda, and have ever since.

Same way in NYC if you to Famous Original Ray's or whatever, they only make one size. You can buy it by the slice or order the whole thing, but they are all the same size.

I call it pop.
I had a friend at school from Tennessee who would order Coke every time we went to a restaurant. It was weird when he explained that down south, you go to a restaurant and order a Coke...and they would ask "what kind?" He would then respond "Mountain Dew."
I also got made fun of by my friend in New York for calling my shoes tennis shoes while I was staying with him.

^^I have a similar situation.
I call it pop, but I have a cousin from Louisville that does the same thing with coke.
I agree, of all of the things to argue about, this is one of the most heated discussions.

The calling all sodas "Coke" thing really bugs me.
I could not care less if you call it "pop" or "soda" but unless you are ordering a "Coke" or just want whatever cola the place has you shouldn't say "coke".
That's like me going into a candy store and saying "can I have a Snickers" and expecting them to ask me what kind of candy bar I want.
