What does this mean? I'm always heard that he's a spender, so it's obviously true, but the NBA has a salary cap, does it just mean he doesn't mind going over and paying the luxury tax?j_crazy wrote: he might not be top 10% richest, but he spends like he is.

Yes, he doesn't mind paying the luxury tax. He's always been vocal that he'll do whatever it takes. That's as long as LeBron is there--if you think about it, that makes sense. Pour out money, because your franchise value is HUGE with LeBron--much more than what he could possibly spend.
And yes, Gilbert spends money on the same things Cuban does. It's said that the Cavs have the best practice facility in the NBA and he dumped a TON of money into the Q when he bought the franchise.

He doesn't care about the luxury tax like some owners do (hence why teams want to stay under the cap). He'll pay the extra money without a problem.

Winning certainly does, but I think what he understands is that LBJ=making money. You do whatever you can to keep him happy and you HAVE to win to keep him there, but it's more about that than it is winning--regardless of what he says. He's a smart man, and any of us dumbasses are smart enough to see that if LeBron leaves the value of the Cleveland Cavaliers (an asset that Dan Gilbert has control of) goes to SHIT.j_crazy wrote: SQ covered it.

Dan Gilbert is worth over a billion dollars, so he's pretty much set on whatever he wants to do with the Cavs.
He said during his press conference that spending money makes money and winning makes you the most.
With that said, Tom Thibodeau could be a sleeper for the job as well.

i used the commutative property and didn't show my work.
LBJ = winning = making money.
he's spending money to keep LBJ and therefore win, allowing him to then make money.

Yeah, I get what you're saying and I agree--however, I think the winning is really not that big of a factor. It's a product of having a player and of course he wants his team to win but he makes more money off of LeBron's presence than he does from winning. Know what I mean? They could win 45 games next year and get knocked out in the 1st round--but if they have LeBron, they'll still make a boatload of money. They could win 45 and make the playoffs and if they do it without him, they're probably in the red.

I think they have close to a 30% share in the Cavs, so it's probably big input, but obviously Dan Gilbert has the final say.

And, according to this article from May 3 of this year, this apparently STILL hasn't been approved by the NBA owners, so they own 0% perhaps?
I assume Gilbert still will listen to then and treat them as 15% owners while the NBA drags their feet on it, but who knows.

Those are both from a year ago though, I'm pretty sure they took a bigger share this year...I could be wrong though. I didn't find anything on it other than that old stuff, but I didn't look very hard either.

The Cavs are not a good fit for Phil. He needs a superstar player with a killer instinct to win and the Cavs do not have that kind of player on their roster, well maybe Delonte but its the wrong kind of Killer instinct.
