While America clamors for the coveted "benefits" of European-style socialism, European governments are struggling to make ends meet on liberal social benefits despite per capita military expenditures far below that of the United States. But all over Europe governments with big budgets, falling tax revenues and aging populations are experiencing rising deficits, with more bad news ahead.
With low growth, low birthrates and longer life expectancies, Europe can no longer afford its comfortable lifestyle, at least not without a period of austerity and significant changes. The countries are trying to reassure investors by cutting salaries, raising legal retirement ages, increasing work hours and reducing health benefits and pensions.
Shouldn't we pause, take a breather, look across the ocean at what lies ahead, and change course a bit?
The insistence by our current DC "leadership" to mimmick the European model is a bit maddening while alarm bells signaling "utopian" socialist unsustainability are ringing all over the European "Union."
